I am reluctant to post this---but.

What is the reasoning or logic behind owning, breeding, or raising breeds of dogs that are generally considered "attack" dogs? Or those breeds that have temperaments prone to display aggression.

Generally, reports of dog violence involve Rottys, Shepards, P Bulls and various mongrel mixes of same.

Please be honest with replys, should you choose to.

Pat A buddy of mine has a few rottys that are the most gentle kind dogs I have ever seen. They are very smart also. One of them was recovered from an abusive household, she has turned from a downright mean critter to the best of the bunch.

I Had a mean dog one time and it was a mixed breed. Dont know why but that dog was born to be nasty. No matter how you treated him he was just downright mean. I had to get rid of him because of the kids.

Nice looking dog there spinner.

Oh I choose to.
I have heard all the bad stories about different breeds of dogs and what they can do.
I have raised Rotts, Shepards, Jacks for a long time now and not one of mine have had a aggressive moment.
You know why, cause I treat my dogs with upmost care.
I treat them the way I would want treated and they are my best buddies.
Sure, Pit Bulls and other breeds are killers if you let them be that way.
Some dogs are plain stupid, but 99% of the dogs are the way they are because of the way they have been treated and/or trained.
I am not going to get in a shouting match over my dogs.
They are part of my family and I know how they are.
I have placed over 40 Rotts and about 25 Sheps in households with kids, and older people and have them calling me all the time wanting to know if I have any, that their brother, neighbor etc. wants one.
I stand behind my dogs period.
You look at them the way you want, but dogs are the way they are taught to be.
Good day.

Re: LONE SURVIVOR

dogs are not born or breed into aggression they are left to be that way.Had a pitt bull for 15 years and he wouldn't hurt a flea unless I commanded him to. If they are raised right they will act right.
I know I am going to get hammered over this but I have proved this on three occasions with a pitt bull a Doberman and a rottie

BTW sbn that dog looks good you have done a good job with him

Re: LONE SURVIVOR

Bubbakat I hate to disagree with ya. I have had my share of dogs, all treated the same way, all have been good dogs except that one. It was a shepard collie mix. He was great to me and the wife, but hated just about everyone else. He was super protective of Kim (my wife). He bit the UPS man once. Dont know why that dog was so aggressive, but he was.

I do agree that any breed can be great dogs. But just like people their has to be a few bad ones.

It is the large, powerful breeds of dogs that are often trained as guard dogs that create the mythology of "attack" breeds.

The breed most often named in unprovoked attacks on people is. . . are you ready for this? . . . Dalmation.

I have personally been attacked by several "lap" breeds and one cocker spaniel. Never by a pit bull, rotty, dobie or mongrel, though I have been pals with all of them.

The dogs i've had were all large working breeds or mixes. The only mean one was a doberman/husky and you couldnt teach her anything. When my girls were growing up I had a shephard and that dog loved the kids and they could do anything with her but if an adult tried to touch the kids she would get downright nasty, but never bit anyone.

Re: LONE SURVIVOR

Ahoy SBN--my post WAS NOT intended to start a shouting match---and most respectfully not a shot at you or your pups. I do believe that I did not post what my beliefs are, as irrelevant as mine my be.

I had hoped this post would draw the reasons people choose to own these breeds. Kind of like, why do you choose a Merc or whatever.

Reasons could be looks, nature, family history, so on.

Since some have posted their experiences or history (not the intention here)I've had three in my life so far.
#1-"Oliver"-my families wirehair terrier as a kid--hated mini-bikes, want the dog to come-fire mini up and Ollie came pronto, biting front tire to kill. Real good dog, died old age.
#2-"Sam"-my first dog as a young adult. P Bull/Samoyed mix--fine as a young pup, more and more aggressive as he aged. Fine w/ me and select few--untrustworthy with others. Bit a guy in the foot once at boat launch. And pizza delivery guy who came into mud room unexpectedly. Final bite, at 6 years old, was a younger girl (17-18), bare foot, drew blood--10 day quarantine--put down. God did I feel bad, kinda like a pop went wrong and real bad for girl.
#3-"Roxxi Blu"--PB Black Lab-six and one half now-sweetest pup. Loves all, GREAT with my kids.

Perhaps SBN, my post may have been viewed as inflammatory to the breeds mentioned due to use of "attack" dogs. Bad choice, sorry all. :(

(edit) btw "Chance" looks excellent. Real nice coloring healthy and great build.
Also, my neighbors have Rotti, "Bentley", a stately old boy, fat and gentle. Awhile back a cousins family had "Bud", a Rotti/Lab mix--another sweet pup. Passed naturally.

Why don't you do the mamma dog a favor and get her fixed. Are you trying to profit from these dogs?
Rotts don't bring very much $.
Rotts have alot of health issues and generally don't live beyond the age of 10.
People keep trying to breed them bigger and bigger and that just brings on the health problems.
Big dogs generally don't bite its the little worthless bassturds that do.
QUIT BREEDING DOGS!!!!
60 MILLION DOGS A YEAR GET PUT TO SLEEP BECAUSE OF IRRESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS.

Re: LONE SURVIVOR

SBN - he is a Beaut!

As for breeding - I know you are a responsible guy. The people who should not breed dogs are the Puppy mills many of whom are irresponsible and inter-breed.

I used to breed dobies becuase I had a fine show class ***** that was perfect. She had a great blood line and produced blues and reds which are rare :D I miss her to this day :(

JB - I have heard that about Dalmations. I have several breed books taht talk about the characteristics of each and I have found them to be very accurate and helpful. Once you know the tendencies of breeds you know how to deal with them better. Becuase I knew what to expect from our new Cocker I knew better how to train him and deal with him.

SBN, Beautiful dog.

Geez, Jay, I hear there's some trees out there that need hugging too. Give it a break.

Pat, Rott's are great dogs if raised by a good hand. Most of the misconceptions come from the few that aren't. We have a GSD (German Shepherd Dog) that's about as good as they get for dispelling those myths.. Come into my house and I guarantee he'll lick ya to death :D :D Threaten any member of his family though, and he's a different dog.

-Roger

SBN that's a fine lookin' critter. The rottys I've known have been some of the fiercest licking machines known to man - I've loved each one. Big lovable mutts! If ya wanta breed go ahead. I sense from reading your various posts that you care for and love those that you're responsible for. Enjoy being the Poppa, Grampy or whatever. There's nothing sweeter than a litter. Once had 13 Old English in the house. Sorry about the lost ones.

Re: LONE SURVIVOR

Dogs are much like children. While I think certain breeds are more likely to be seen as more aggressive due to their size. Almost any dog can be tought to be mean by abuse, most are good at heart. Each has its own personality. We have a 50lb Husky that is typicaly as gentle as she can be. Won't jump on kids, won't hurt adults, but is unbelivably strong. I've seen her pull my 250lb brother off the couch into the floor playing tug. HOWEVER, I feel sorry for anyone or thing that threatens my wife or daughter. The hair on the back of her neck bristles, the teeth start showing, and she sets herself to protect. Granted, I have only seen her do this toward other animals, she seems to try to stay between strangers and her family. No one can hold the baby without her sniff of approval, otherwise she sits at their feet with eyes fixed on them. With her colors, she scares some folks a bit as they say she looks like a wolf. Didn't realize wolves were such babies  I could see where Huskies could have a bad rep. Then again if you watch this one, she thinks our baby is hers as well and makes every step my wife makes. If baby makes a sound, Fancy stops breathing and perks her ears. If baby fusses and we don't get to her fast enough, Fancy finds us and lets us know with a gentle nudge.

Re: LONE SURVIVOR

I've owned a Rott. Put him down last August at the age of 13 almost 14. I have horses, Labs(I raise for hunting),chickens, cats fish and let me tell you when he left us this household has never been the same. He was like the ambassador to all the other animals. I dearly miss him as does everyone. I wish I was around to put my 2 cents in on the name. I would have named him "TEENTH" as in 1 sixteenth. But Chance is one good looking dog
