JasonB - she is awesome! I have never seen a husky with that coloring before. Very nice.

My cousin raises huskies and they are loveable but really high energy! Man they can run for miles non-stop! I love going over and taking the rake brush to them to get the dead fur off. I can fill a garbage bag and they love it so much :D

Ralph, the fur thing gets old after 5 years, but it's a price (there are many) for having a Husky. You get used to vacuming every day or so. Not only can they run for miles, but they can also dig for miles as well. She got bored las yeat so she tunneled under out above ground pool. She had a tunnel big enough to crawl under the pool before I caught her. The bad part about teh running for miles, is they run so fast and get so excited, they have no clue how to get home. Other than that, they are very smart animals. She knows exactly how to manipulate us to get her way

Re: LONE SURVIVOR

Great Hooty - now you tell me - Coco is a buff male cocker :p My son fully body tackles him (when they fight for a toy) and he is great about it. He won't leave my side and if you are gone for 5 minutes, when you return he greets you like you have been gone for days. All traits of the breed.

Jason - I know what you mean. His male tunneled under his shed and undermined the foundation. He had to build a cement pad and put the shed on it.

On day Chinook got lose and ran for over 5 miles without every paying attention to where he was going. My cousin chased him for hours. The thing that finally stopped him was another dog on a leash that he stopped to check out. Man they are fast and strong! :D

QUIT BREEDING DOGS!!!!
60 MILLION DOGS A YEAR GET PUT TO SLEEP BECAUSE OF IRRESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS.
OK Jay, I'll bite. Where is this?
Simply can't be true.
Since not all dogs are put to sleep, then according to your statement, there must be on the order of 66 million dogs born every year.

But the truth is, there are only 6.3 million dogs born per year. So for your statement to be true, then all dogs born in the last 10 years would have to have been put to sleep last year, and by April, the remaining dogs would all be put to sleep.

THe truth is that only 2.4 million dogs are euthanized per year. THese include all the dogs that are put down due to accidents, medical reasons, and old age.

THere are only 4 million people born in the USA per year.

Re: LONE SURVIVOR

Actually the number of dogs euthanized every year is 12 million (I don't know what I was thinking earlier). Even if its only 2 million thats way to many. The county shelter in my area euthanizes 1,000 dogs a month.

$250-$300 per dog? Out here in California those dogs aren't worth anything. They are the #1 dog that are put to sleep. The shelters are overflowing with them.
A few years back a friend of mine had a litter of Rotts because he thought he was going to make a bunch of money. He ended up selling four of them for about $50 and the rest (about 5 or 6 ) ended up going to the pound.
There used to be a rottweiller rescue group but they ended up throwing in the towel cuz it was a losing battle out here.
Its ironic we have dog rescue groups made up of volunteers that donate alot of time and money for these animals and than you have people out there that continually breed dogs for the sake of money.

Breeding worthless lap dogs is ok. Purebred lapdogs rarely make it to the shelters.
Its the large breed that pay the price for being a xmas or birthday present or whatever special occasion pops up.

Quit breeding that poor dog!!!!!

Re: LONE SURVIVOR

SBN, I'm glad to see you brought this post back for an udate. Last Chance is one fine looking dog. The raising of the pups is like that of a human. Treat them mean and they learn to be mean. It is that way with any living being.

Californina lives by a different code than the rest of the states it seems. I don't think snow plows sell very good in the southern part of CA. and would probably have to pay to take one away.

The media out there sounds like they have become determined to use propaganda to destroy the Rots.
Again another thing hurt by the medias ability to scare people for no reason.

Yes a large dog can be intimidating, but so can a human that is 6'6" 350#, male or female. Also if your driving a small car a 18 wheeler semi is intimidating as well.

People should research things before they judge on hear say. (media) One should remain unbiased until they make their own decesion IMHO.

Thanks again SBN for the udate on Last Chance. Keeper is now a little over a year old and weighs about 95#. I'll try to get a pic of him on the chat web.

Re: LONE SURVIVOR

60 MILLION DOGS A YEAR GET PUT TO SLEEP BECAUSE OF IRRESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS
The key words there are IRRESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS. People go get dogs at the pet store because they're small, cute, and cuddly. They don't take the time to find out that the Husky, Rotty, Lab, etc they just bought will grow to be 50-100lbs and have special needs. In out case, we knew that Fancy (Husky) would make a terrible house dog by most standards. 50+lbs, non stop hair, hyper as all get out. In return we have a loving pet who thinks she is a person, doesn't chew anything important, helps watch baby, loves to fish, and is as loyal as one could ever want. Unfortunately, she also thinks she is a lap dog

Want those animals that are destroyed to survive? Start calling for the big pet stores to teach people that the cute little lab they just bought will grow up and eat everything in sight. With SBN, I'm betting the folks who buy his dogs know what they are getting and what its needs will be. The animals won't be so easily discarded because they grow up. My dad breeds/raises/trains Bird Dogsmuch like SBN and his Rotties. People who buy them know exactly what they are getting and what the needs of those dogs are.

On the subject of the attitudes of dogs and how certain breeds get a bad rap, wouldn't we all be in trouble if Chihuahuas grew to bethe size of larger breeds? Anyone ever seen one that idn't have a little dog complex and attack any toes in siight? (The Chihuahua comment is meant as a joke, not to be taken seriously)

Re: LONE SURVIVOR

gotta back up SBN here. rottys are NOT aggressive dogs by nature, actually they are quite gentle and loving. my sis in Cali. has a huge male and he is just a big baby.
it seems that when a dog breed becomes real popular in this country, a bunch of unethical breeders jump on the bandwagon and try to cash in. they don't really care about temperment or good breeding, they are looking to make a quick buck. overbreeding is a terrible thing and can produce some nasty and some really stupid dogs.
experienced and ethical breeders are another breed alltogether imo.
M.Y.
ps SBN, are the cinder blocks her chew toys? LOL my sis's Rott (Butkus) just loves to play with big rocks and it ain't good on their teeth.

What is up with that? I had a Rotty for 12 years, just put her down last year. Best dog a guy could ask for, cried and cried when she died. She loved rocks too. Chew on them, push them around with her nose--I even threw one down through an ice fishing hole and she would keep stuffing her head down the hole trying to get that rock.

I have a hard time with the stereotype rotties get. You could have broken into my house and she would roll onto her back so you could scratch her tummy. The bark scares alot of people away though.

Gaugeguy, I couldn't agree w/ you any more. I live in Ca. as you probably know. Its a big long state, and why we have to be held accountable for things that happend 10 hours away is beyond me. Thats like someone in Florida getting blamed for something that happend in New York New York(a city so nice they had to name it twice). I'm so p!ssed right now. My Rott was probably one of the best friends I ever had

Re: LONE SURVIVOR

I love big dogs. I had a dutch shepherd and a border collie as a kid.

I like rottweilers, never owned one. A friend of mine had one they picked up at the humanes sociaty they named roxy. She was missing one eye and they had a black patch made for her to wear over it. She was a sweet dog to all and loved to lick and sit on ya. She would not leave the house unless someone put her patch on first. :) If she needed to go out she would first find her patch and then someone to put it on and open the door...

Jay
Your friend and others like him are where you should place your crusade. If you got the same nerve in person as you do here among real law abiding dog lovers on the net, you should do just fine. Now buck up Jay and go tell HIM how you feel.
..... city slickers

I have also heard that Rotts are great dogs. The only thing I would have an issue with is there jaw strength. AS i understand it, there are like pit bulls in having extremely strong jaws. Thats why the pit bull is so dangerous.

For me I have a black pug. It doesn't make a lot of noise, doesn't make a mess, is smart as can be, and has small poop. Its a great dog..

rogerwa, FYI, Pit Bulls have jaw strength of 1900PSI, now compare that to the jaw strength of a Rott or Dobie which is at 900PSI and there is a big difference compared to the different sizes of the dogs.
The thing about Pit Bulls, read some, is that they have a problem with something just going off in them and they attack for no reason.
No one has been able to figure this out yet.

Re: LONE SURVIVOR

I had a purple ribbon pit when I was a kid. Buzz (Official name was Kenneth's Buzzsaw) was one of the better dogs I have seen or had. Whenever he was six months old my dad "bumped" him with an older pit. Unfortunetly the other dog didn't fair to well. I never can understand why he did that, it just helped to teach him aggression. The dog was a protector. Whenever it was time for one of us kids to get a spanking my dad had to chain him up. He learned this by trail and error. The ol man went to whuppin on me one night and the dog broke down the front door and my bedroom door and pulled my dad off of me and held him at bay for about ten minutes, the ol man wasn't gonna even think about moving till I got the dog put up. A few years later we moved to the city. We kids were playing hide and seek. My brother was running from another kid and came through the back yard screaming. Buzz seen this and caught the kid chasing him. he just grabbed onto the boys leg and held him till my dad got there. The kid ended up having to get stitches. We moved again, this time to a small town. The dog got taken off his chain one night (by someone not in our household) and they put him in a goat pen. I am guessing he started playing with the goats and then get tough with them. The kids that did this got scarred and told the goat ownwers about it. By the time they got there he had killed 15 of them. Buzz died that night. It hurt me forvever. I felt like I lost my parents when that dog died. He watched over me. Theres no telling how many snakes and coyotes that dog killed to keep me safe. I wanted to do the same thing to the kids that took him off the chain and put him in the goat pen.

I then got a beagle. Clyde was a trooper. Everywhere I went that dog followed me. True to life version of mans best freind. I finnally moved to the country where he could roam without fear. A neighbor (a real B**** too) caught him and give him away to somebody else. The real sad part about it is she caaled my mother in law after she did it and told her to tell me to come get the dog. She did this after she give the dog away. This was all in one days time mind you. I don't guess she ever figured out why she kept losing trashcans, they kept going missing every week for almost two years, she sure had a lot of money tied up in them. Aw, sweet revenge.

Fast forward 15 years. I am married now and my wife wants a rott. We find her one. Carla (official name was Carla Von Braun) was a queen. She eneded up weighing in about 130. Never aggressive, lap dog if there ever was one. She would slobber all over you, if you sat in a chair she would crawl up in your lap and there was nothing you could do about it. Believe it or not till she got about 100 pounds she was an inside dog. We decided to get another rott so we bought us a 2 month old male with good bloodlines. He was here 3 days and got sick. I didn't know it at the time but rotts are very suspectible to parvo. This pup brought it to our house. Pup died after one whole week of ownership, Carla died about three weeks and $500 at the vet later. Darn, another great dog I miss.

Current time. I have a boxer/lab that is tigerstripe/brindle. Rebel is a heck of a dog. A little hyper at almost a year old. He will occasionally knock the kids down, but only ought of love. He licks you to death. Always wants some one to rub his head or belly. He always stays by my side if we are in the fence, trying to shake hands. I have another dog that needs to go somewhere else soon. I call him my quarter dog. Rebel is his dad, his mother, who I used to own is rott/doberman. Sad part about these particular crooses is all of the granparents to this dog are pedigreed and papered dogs, they are just fence jumpers and like to do it too much. Diamond Dave is his name. It started out as diamond until he dropped his cohonies and I realized she was a he. He is a fine looking dog. I waited to long to clip his tail and now I don't wanna spend the money at the vet. We didn't clip his ears either because either look just like a boxers, kinda short with a little flap hanging over. He has rott markings. No other colorations at all, almost perfect looking markings too. We are looking for a good beagle for the girls. They are 8 and 2 so it will fight them just right. My mom raises MinPins so we may end up with one of those, I sure hope not.

Dogs as a rule act the way you treat them. If you want them to be mean they will. Some dogs are naturely aggressive, but they tend to be the best protectors too. Treat them right and they will treat you right. Don't show attention to them, don't feed regular, etc and you will probably end up with a dog you can't stand.

How in the worl did I ever type this much, the carpel tunnel is killing me right now

Edit: Had to clean up my misspells

the stupidest dog I ever owned was a min-pin.
couldn't house train that idiot for anything and
I have trained many dogs over the years. walk him
for a half hour and he would come in the house
and go. the day he lifted his leg on my back when
I was sitting on the floor was the last straw.
found my wife a mongrel lap dog and he was trained
in 2 days.
if u have 2 dogs, they should deff. be samesex.
a female will always and forever try to assume
dominance over a male... kinda like humans :D
