Sorry about the wreck, it sucks, but you could have had some deer jerky...

If you decide to part it out, I'd like to try and persuade you out of the front axle, springs and hangers, I wouldn't mind picking up the whole truck because parts are hard to find for the old Fords around here.

Re: Look what I just did earlier today!

Maybe some surge brakes on the trailer when you fix/replace the axle wouldn't be a bad idea? I know it's a light boat, but more brakes never hurts anyone.

Surge brakes would not have helped. When the rears on the truck locked and it started to get sideways the pressure on the brakes would have released and it would have happened anyway.
Electric on the other hand would have stayed applied and may or may not have helped get it back under control.

In a jackknife siutation (and that is what this is), if you get more than 15 degs of angle between the truck and trailer, it becomes unrecoverable, and the crash is going to happen no matter the kind of brakes you have.
When I went to the skid pad for big trucks, they teach you to hit the throttle and turn away from the skid. Opposite to what we are all tought to do without a trailer. Now granted you must have some room to manuver and have practiced this to even have a chance at recovering it.

Im glad no one was hurt.

don't swerve or slam on the brakes for animals. You put humans in a great danger by doing so, yourself and others behind you or in opposing lanes.

^^^^ SOOOO true. My torn SC joint, fractured vertabre, and pins in my shoulder can attest to it!

Years ago, I was in a truck with my bud , an experienced ( I thought) driver who was hauling my loaded trailer , the trailer we were hauling had surge brakes , and it swayed once , then he touched the brakes, thinking that was the right thing to do. Well, it swayed back the other way even further, and then after the third sway we spun down the highway, backwards , with the trailer leading the way.....after we came to a rest it was a yard sale all over the highway....and in the median , thankfully right side up, sorta....

We walked away , but not after having a wrecker pick the backwards bent up truck off the upside down mangled trailer.

I much prefer electric brakes now! With a dash mounted controller!

I am so glad you walked away, Jumbo!

I looked at the skid marks on the highway, and it was only 20 feet from where the rear locked up until the whole thing started going sideways. At the speed I was going that means I had less than 1/2 of a second to do anything.

That is the exact reason for electric brakes.
It happens fast.

Well, the immediate plan is a Jeep CJ-7 I already have, it has a V-8 and a TH400 automatic. Then I'll look around as see what I can get a deal on.

No-NO on the CJ-7 as a tow vehicle, way too short. If you think you had problems with the F250 getting turned around in a panic, you can count on it with that rig! I appreciate it's got the nut to move it, but it sure won't stop it!

Cows have got to be the dumbest animals on the planet. After I hit a deer last year I decided that deer are just really, really fast cows.

It's a pretty well known fact that deer by far kill more people every year than any other animal.

Re: Look what I just did earlier today!

Glad yer OK. Truck sounded like it was a beast.

Strangely our neighbors dogs jumped a buck not even 4 months old and it ended up in our pond and drowned. After the game and fish told him it was his responsibility to get it out of there he fished it out and took it down to the old sawmill for the coyotes to feast on. Too bad we were afraid the meat had ruined already by the time we got it out because a young deer is always TENDER.

Also, one night coming back from DFW I saw more deer than I care to count. I was dozing at the wheel with cruise on 78 as well...and wasn't wearing my seatbelt. Gotten a lot wiser since then and the new truck fusses at me if I drive more than a couple feet without buckling up.

I hope you were on highway 78 when you set the cruise and not cruising at 78 mph while falling asleep:eek:

Most (probably all) new cars have a seat belt reminder now. Mine has a sensor for the passenger also and will beep at me if the passenger doesn't buckle up as well. You can turn the reminder off in my ford. I don't remember how but its some weird ritual with key position etc.

My buddy turned his off in his 08 Ram. If caught without one you're guaranteed a ticket.

Re: Look what I just did earlier today!

I look at this thread as S8IT happens... It was a reaction and thats all... All the breaks in the world couldnt have helped him! Slamming on the gas might have though.... has anyone owned a mustang?????

Anyway.... Its very unfortunate and im personally sorry to hear that this happened to you...

Thanks God the family is ok and your ok.......

Material things can all be replaced and or fixed....

Please post some pictures of the boat all sides.... Just interested on how the trailer and straps, boat held up to this......

Look at it like this.... Now yoy may be able to convince the wife you need a super duty diesel dually.... ;)

And if the boat is a wreck now you may be able to work on getting that other boat you always wanted.....

But remember this....... Somtimes we always get caught up in lifes stress etc and we don't slow down and smell the coffee, roses, penut butter and jelly,,, Whatever,,,,, So when you do have the family in the car and the boat etc etc etc just drive slow and relax and enjoy.....

Try not to be in a rush and hopfully things will go smooth....

As far as bambi etc we all understand it was a reaction... No matter what people (WOULD HAVE DONE) suppossedly..... So just thank your lucky stars and think of preventitive measures just incase there is a next time

Also ask your insurance company if there is a Driver safety program for trailering..... If there is maybe it will actually help and teach you and or us somthing that we never knew about.....

Me just from owning drift cars and street cars etc I never step on the break when I start loosing control... I step on the gas..... Same in snow..........:D;):)

But I just want you to know I feel your pain............. Good luck brother

nope... no legal requirement to have the reminder. oddly enough, I helped an undercover cop (detective) disable it in his subaru this weekend. Turn the key on, and then unplug/plug the driver side seatbelt 20 times in under 30 seconds to disable it. Doing it again reverses it.

Re: Look what I just did earlier today!

How does it compare to the 78 ? Wish we had rust free stuff like that around here. That 78 looked decent.

It's a lot nicer, the 78 looked OK from a distance, but up close you could see the beginnings of the rust monster taking it's toll.

The new truck is down a little on power, but not much, but it has all the niceties (cruise, AC, automatic tranny) rides a bit rougher, but it has a leaf spring front suspension instead of the coils I had in the 78. Seems to get about the same mileage, and the GVWR's are within 300 pounds.

Here's a pic:

Best part is the paint matches the boat.

Re: Look what I just did earlier today!

Are those tires larger than stock?? Would larger than stock tires make it feel less powerful? I would think it would but I don't have any experience with this.

Anyways.... That truck looks sweet!! Congratulations.
