Re: looking at a '83 Islander

I don't want to hijack Mike's thread with bracket talk, so I'll say this real quick...

For me, it's not quite so much about the bracket really. It's about the OB that bolts onto it. Price out a nice 150/175/200 and I am out of the game just like that. Bummer.

Re: looking at a '83 Islander

It has been confirmed that this boat has an Iron Duke, GM 2.5L I/O.

Roslynn and the boys stopped by again today and chatted with the farmer selling the rig. I think they like the Islander:D

Umm, with a comment like that, there is no reason why that boat should still be sitting at the farmers place.

Am I right guys???

Re: looking at a '83 Islander

I've got to confess guys, I've been totally against this outboard bracket thing. Now I must reconsider, I'm leaning the other way. It sure looks feasible to me, and not that expensive (if you make you're own bracket).

Lots of advantages. More room in the boat, full transom for safety at sea, planes quicker too. Twin outboards would be nice for reliability, and trolling.

I vote Islander, I pray it's an OMC too.:D

Hey whatever works for you Mike, just giving you some options. Good luck. I'm done for now.

Don I'm with ya on the bracket idea, but if this Mercruiser iron duke runs I would run it until it died I think.

I had a '87 Jeep Cherokee with a 2.5L(loved that little 4x4:D) I wonder if these are the same blocks?

I know that GM made the motors but maybe AMC had a deal with them at the time to put them in the Jeeps?

Mike, Jason is so right. Where you gonna find a "4 cycle" outboard for a price that won't kick your butt out of our bottom dwelling mob??:D Good luck on the compression checks cause if "Momma ain't happy....ain't NOBODY HAPPY"!!!;)

Re: looking at a '83 Islander

Here's the other rig that I've been thinking about...it's in the upper peninsula, but I'm always looking for a good reason to drive across the bridge. It sure would be a nice trip to haul this thing back.:D

The price is the same, only real difference is that it's a 21 footer and an outboard model. It comes with a 100hp Johnson I believe, but I have the feeling it's an electric shifter that would be parted out upon purchase.

I really like both boats and it's a tough choice. I will not be rushing into anything.

My line of thinking is that the cheaper route is to run the iron duke, rather than gamble on an older 100hp outboard or paying for a new one.

Then if I needed to upgrade the I/O I could call Jason and have him help figure it out(scrap glasser ski rig/bayliner :p).

That's nice too! (Kinda partial to em...don't know why..:D) Comes with toys on the roof AND a windshield wiper!!!! And she's already started the molting process to become a pure Aluminum boat.;) So I'm thinkin you should be a 4 boat man..

:D Well...to be honest...she approached me with a budget in hand showing me how we are able to do this. So yeah she's on board and we appreciate the encouragement:D

Doug I know your heart is in the right place but you're gonna get me in trouble man!:D

I hope to own a facility capable of housing several classic tin rigs, until then we have to run a tight ship. The 12' AeroCraft will be moved up north onto the beach of Lake Huron.

My dad has some room in the loft of his pole barn that aluminum boats would fit nicely into for winter also:)

So I'd like to keep it at two boats but I know after the AeroCraft is gone I will be looking at 14 footers again:rolleyes:

BTW Do you ever wish you had more deck space and less cabin on your rig? That is the biggest difference between the Islanders and Chiefs.

OK, now i've heard it all! She found the boat, has been looking at the boat, has taken pics of the boat, talked to the boats owner, likes the boat, and has even included it in the budget. WOW...........

Re: looking at a '83 Islander

I don't know, I think I'd vote for the outboard model. I really like my buddy's Chief. However, I will say that the cockpit room is limited by the larger cabin and the huge splashwell. The cabin is HUGE though and would be nice for camping. My buddy's moves adequately with a 90HP. A decent 90-140HP should be able to be had for around $1000-$2000. You could drop a grand just getting the I/O up to date on all its maintenance.

Re: looking at a '83 Islander

I agree that a nice OB can be found for that kind of cash...there is a 115 Evinrude that looks mint for 1k locally.

I think I will call the guy selling the Chief and see what the deal is on the 100hp before I make any decisions. I do like the idea of a large cabin for storage and camping.

Thanks for the feedback:)

Re: looking at a '83 Islander

That 21 up north is a FINE looking boat and looks ready to go. Would he keep the motor hence reducing the hassel of removal and you selling it? I STILL LIKE The Bracket I see a few on the west coast here and the seem to like the way they handle. I have a lot of wasted space on my 22 Holiday with the 200 Johnson on the bach. The splesh well is huge and makes it almost necessary to have seperate controlls up front to run the kicker. I removed the full width seat in the back so thers more room but still so darn far to reach the controlls on the 9.9 Merc. 4 stroke kicker. I wont change this unless the big motor fails and Im getting to old to mtake on any major heavy jobs. Good luck you will make the choice thats right for YOU. Pugetsound.

Re: looking at a '83 Islander

Re: looking at a '83 Islander

It's a tough call for sure. Both are awesome boats each with their own pros and cons ya know. I don't think there is a wrong answer here but one is more right for you and your family buddy.

That Chieftain is sweeeet! It looks like a really great rig. You have a huge cabin there for sure. She is all set up for the OB to bolt on. Great hull, great trailer, just super cool you know. I'd bet if you were standing on that deck you'd be wondering where all the room went though. With the big cabin and splashwell the size of Nebraska that deck gets squeezed for sure. But maybe that is a trade you are happy to make, big cabin and OB for a smaller deck. I do agree that the motor that may (or may not) go with this one is probably DOA - there is a reason it's not on the boat.

The Islander is equally awesome for all the reasons I posted up above there. The wild card is really the IO. I totally agree with EZ about bringing it up to date if the seller hasn't maintained it in a while. There could be some expensive things that need to be done. At the same time though, the regular maintenance stuff isn't all that pricey when you do the work yourself (bellows, gimble bearing, impeller, oil change, yada, yada). A pain in the rump to do but maybe a couple of hundred bucks or so to complete. That is why I am thinking you have that Duke checked out. You may have a hull with a money pit motor or maybe one that just needs the regular maintenance items completed. If it's the latter you have a lot more bang for your buck on the Islander. If you have a junk motor than you are looking at an empty IO hull and comparing it to an empty OB hull.

If it helps any...

The cabin on my Islander is small when compared to the Chief. It's not really a comfortable space to hang out for adults. I think you can sit and play cards in the cabin of a chief. You can do that in mine too, but not nearly as comfortable I'm sure. Kiddos can play and roll around in there just fine. It will be great for times like a rain storm or a cold day on the lake and I have the family - they can just duck right in there. I can lay down and fully stretch out and have two offspring sleeping comfortably next to me. In a pinch we could fit all five of us in there and sleep, for now anyway (they seem to want to keep eating and growing).

At the same time for me, any opportunity to overnight there will be a shoreline and we'll have a tent (or stars) overhead so the cabin isn't super necessary for that sort of thing. Nice to have if we wanted to though. My bride would never sleep on it, she'd barf her guts out.

For now, I am seeing...

-OB hull vs. IO hull
-big cabin/smaller deck vs. small cabin/bigger deck
-new (used) OB vs. wild card Iron Duke

Side note...

What is up with Roz! Dude she is awesome!!!! She found the boat, has visited and talked with the seller, twice, kids in tow, taken all the photos we see and provided the budget to make it possible. I am betting the next thing we'll be looking at is photos of her painting the trailer and fitting vinyl decking for one of these rigs! Man alive!

Let's see - Mike, so far you've logged onto iboats and chewed the fat with us chuckle heads.

Hey Roz, you rock!:D:D

(sheesh, that was a lot of writing there, sorry guys)

Re: looking at a '83 Islander

Here is what I've done or need to do on my I/O so far;
tune up
plugs
points
cap
rotor
wires
Oil Change
4-5 quarts of oil
oil filter
Needs bellow etc;
bellows
gimble bearing
shift cable and boot
outdrive;
impeller
oil change

I'm sure I've missed some things! I'll probably do this every 5 years. Some of it every year.

I've seen several 115 hp outboards going for $400. How much to get it running, of course they ran last time out! Tough decision but no wrong answer.

Good luck.

Re: looking at a '83 Islander

The controls pictured on the blue Chieftain are similar to the control pictured with an electric shift outboard Jas PM'd me about. So I'm thinking it's an electric shift. That's doesn't doom it though. If it runs and shifts you could run it a while or at least sell it and get some money out of it.

Knowing Mike, I don't think he's going to be replacing his own gimbel bearing on an I/O. Just a guess :p:p

Re: looking at a '83 Islander

Just for full disclosure purposes...

This one time, I heard my Starcraft bro EZ here ^^^^^ call an IO "gross."

Now, I am willing to bet that he called the girls in his 3rd grade class the same thing back in the day. Since that age of adolescence he has grown and matured and I know now that has come to appreciate our companion gender. So much so, that I think he actually lives with a girl now.

While I think it may take him a little longer, he'll come around on this IO thing. I can see someday, in the not too distant future, him really enjoying all the benefits of this clearly superior diriveline. I'd bet he even becomes an owner some day.

So, here's to you EZ! It will be just great to see you accept, embrace and maybe even one day come love the IO!

:D:D

(Happy Friday Buddy)
