I live in Texas, and dont plan to live anywhere else, except possibly Florida. (Tampa/st.pete/desoto area)

I live inland in texas, but I make at least 10-12 coastal trips every year, and do a good deal of saltwater fishing. I also fish several local reservoirs, rarely a river.

I just bought my very first bought, a 1968 chrysler w/a 65hp. I intend to keep this for about a year, just to get into the whole maintenance/proper care aspect of owning/operating a boat. Then, I was planning on financing a new, or newly used boat, until I came upon these Do-it-yourself boat plans. These boats turn out awesome, and I am ALL ABOUT doing things on my own. I just finished a 3yr 1966 ford mustang restoration where I did all of the work myself, starting when I was 15yrs old.

My reason for posting is that I am trying to find a good plan for a boat that fits into my application. Strictly flats/bay when in saltwater, shallow water. And occassional freshwater in lakes.

Here's what I've been looking at:
http://www.bateau.com/plans/power/PH18.php3
http://www.bateau.com/plans/power/OD18.php3

I think the phantom would be a better choice for my application considering the shallow water use.
However, maybe you know a better set of Boat Plans that you could refer me to.

If so, please let me know!
Thanks!
Shawn

Shawn,
Go to www.duckworksmagazine.com and check out the project gallery of works in progress. Jim Michalak has lots of good plans. There are links to his and other's plans at duckworks. I'm waiting for warmer weather to start a jonboat or skiff.

i like it..!! nice boat for as per you said..

but i don't like it's made outta 1/4 inch ply... nuthin' that size should be less than 3/8 inch .. pref. 1/2 ply...

if your serious about this boat... contact them an ask if you can go thicker..

if'n they try an say that 1/4 is fine... they're liars... walk away...

I too was thinking the 1/4 was way too thin. I suppose that after the glass is laid on it inside and out, that it is fairly sturdy. If you went much thicker, you would have trouble getting it to shape as well, I would think.

I'm going to keep on looking until I get closer, then I'll start emailing the people who designed the boats that interest me.

Thanks again!
Shawn

I'm just about finished building a Bateau.com boat (a GF-12). While 1/4" plywood itself is flimsy, the panels are bent and framed to provide very good strength. Before building, I saw an OD16 that was built about 5 years ago. Still in excellent shape. The owner lives in Jacksonville and uses it for offshore and inshore fishing.

Also, the biaxial cloth used in their designs is nothing at all like woven cloth most people are used to seeing. On the bottom of the boat (1/4" plywood with biax seams and biax cloth), there is no point where you can flex the hull more than a 1/16th of an inch (much less than a typical molded fiberglass hull).

After researching for about a year, I found their designs most appealing in looks and building simplicity. If you're still concerned, go to their forum and ask about any builders in your area that would be willing to show off their boats.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Matt Brueckner

http://glen-l.com/

Try this site. I am building a 57 Chevy looking tail fin boat. The plans are fairly easy to follow.

Mark

Not everyones idea of a good boat, but check it out. They have plywood versions in plans.
http://home.att.net/~DaveCarnell/#Simmons
I also ran across an interesting plan some years ago for a plywood garvy by stevens stephens stevenson stepenson. I have the study plans and will look for them.

I didn't find those plans(Stevens) and could not find it with a web search. I did run across plans I got years ago for the glen l Hunky Dory. That would be a good boat, seaworthy and shallow running. There is a lot to be said for a flat bottom especially if you have to build it. The hunky dory is big, 22'10, but I was going to build it smaller, a risky proposition.

if there sayin' to use 'biaxial' cloth to do the ENTIRE bottom of the hull.. fagettabouit..!! i was wonderin' why the boat weighted so much,, holey moley..!!

that stuff is nasty, ugly, heavy ,& costly..an gallons an gallons an gallons of epoxy .. the stuff is a poxyspoonge..

it could never be sanded smooth enuff to ever even look half way good.. believe me,, this stuff is nasty.. an in IMHO ,, should only be used on joints of a stich & glue craft... not the entire suface..

The bi-axial cloth isn't much more difficult to work with than woven. As far as weight, on my 12' boat, I used roughly 7 sq.yds of 12 oz., no mat or 5 lbs. Plus 5 lbs of epoxy to wet it out and 2-3 lbs of fairing mix. (You don't sand the fiberglass down, you fair to build the surface up.)

As far as total weight, the bottom about 50 sq.ft. is 26 lbs plywood & 13 lbs of epoxy, glass & fairing compound. This is still lighter than using 1/2" plywood for the bottom (39 lbs vs 52 lbs) and much stronger.

Matt Brueckner
