Hello everyone. My new to me boat weighs 2400# boat motor and trailer. I'm afraid my 2008 Escape is going to blow the the trans. I'm looking for a used SUV that is not too large to pull it. Any suggestions? $15000 range.

Re: Looking for tow vehicle

What's the tow rating on your Escape and have you been turning off the OD when towing? If you really want to get another tow vehicle, find something you like that has a tow rating that covers your boat and gear. Many mid sized suvs have a tow rating of at least 3500 lbs. depending on how they are equipped. This can quickly turn into another Ford vs. Chevy debate but there are many vehicles out there capable of pulling your rig without problem. It will come down to your personal preference in the end. Hope this helps you some. There is no one right answer. For what it's worth, I've pulled my toys with Dodge Rams and a Chevy Silverado and never had any problems towing anything I've hooked to.

Re: Looking for tow vehicle

My Escape is rated for #3500 but I hear that they have transmission trouble. I leave it out of O.D. And when I pull a long grade I will drop it into 2nd and run about 45-50 mph. The only towing I've done is to my local lake which is less than 5 miles. It pulls the boat out or the water fine. In the summer I will be fishing in the Eastern Sierra (300 miles one way) and there are some long hills at 7,000' elevation. I tend to obsess about these things and maybe I'm worrying about nothing. I don't want to buy another car if I don't have to.

15 grand would buy you a couple excape transmissions with some left over. On the flip side for 15 grand you have a ton of choices for tow vehicles.

I was thinking about an Explorer or a GMC Envoy.

If your escape does not have factory towing option then it is rated @ 2000#. I*have a 2010 explorer without factory towing option and it is only rated @ 3500#

Re: Looking for tow vehicle

If the tow capacity is indeed well above the actual boat/trailer weight, just use it as a tow vehicle. If you are concerned about the transmission, adjust your driving style to preserve it. The biggest cause of wear in it is shifting on an open throttle. The transmission is designed to soften the shifts and to do so it must allow some slip during the shift. If it shifts with the throttle open, that slip will generate lots of wear and heat. If you manually downshift it on a nearly-closed throttle (set the throttle to maintain speed during the shift), there will be very little wear and heat during the shift. Once the transmission is fully in gear, you can then open the throttle as needed. Upshifts should be done the same way except there's no need to manually upshift, it will obviously happen automatically when you lift the throttle. Once it is in the next gear, you can get back on the gas (but not so much that it will downshift). If you know you'll need a lower gear to climb a hill, downshift on the flat before the hill starts so you don't lose momentum. Never be afraid to rev the snot out of the engine, it's really not harmful of you stay below the red line (think about how your boat engine is used...).

As long as you are under the tow rating of your Escape you should be fine. Its not like you will have the boat permanently attached to the back of the escape. How far will you be towing to get to the lake?

What is your 2,400 lb boat? Everything strains going up hills with a load, sounds like you are doing the right steps. Maybe an auxiliary trans cooler would add piece of mind?

I can testify that my 4Runner I picked up last year for $14K, it had 64,000 miles and was beyond mint condition (trust me- I looked at a bunch of them!). Almost all come with the standard Tow package good for 5,000 lbs and the fuel mileage is between 17-21 consistently. It tows very well!

I'd stay away from the Explorer due to no power + poor transmission and the Envoy due to poor MPG's and electrical issues.

If your tow capacity is above the weight of your rig I'd have the trans fluid flushed and stick with it. If you have to buy a new trans so be it.

I will say, my friend tows his 22' glass boat with a GMC envoy denali and it's a great tow rig, automatic air ride suspension. However he averages 13 mpg with his daily driving.

Must be a heavy foot. Our neighbor with a 2006 Envoy gets 18 mpg in the city, 20mpg on the highway. Hexk, we get 18 mpg in the city with our much bigger GMC Acadia. 13 mpg is way lower than real world.

Re: Looking for tow vehicle

I've owned three in the GMT360 family specifically for towing. The family includes the Trailblazer, Envoy, 9-7x, Rainer and the oddball Ascender.
For me, I only will own a v8 tow vehicle for my trailers and so that meant two Rainiers and the ultra cool SAAB 9-7x. The 9-7x can be had with the 400hp Corvette engine (as could the Trailblazer) . The vast majority of Trailblazers and Envoy's were inline 6's not V8's. The Envoy must be the Denali to have the V8 and those are harder to come by. If you do buy one of the above, make sure that it has a 3.73 rear end and that it has either the G80 locking diff or in the case of the 9-7x the G86 limited slip diff. The G80 was a very cheap option yet few seemed to opt for it while the 9-7x comes one way...completely loaded including the limited slip (not the locker) except for your choice of engine and a few other items.

Re: Looking for tow vehicle

Great, now I'm looking at new tow vehicles!

I say go for it. The reason I opted for this platform is because I am conservative and the platform is inexpensive because of extreme depreciation. They are a lot older now than when I started buying them given they quit making them in 09 but as an example. My 9-7x was 49k and I got it 36 months old, with no kidding a brand new interior since only the driver ever was in it and it cost $13,750. Even the built in tv/dvd was never used and has the Nav too. I've had it 2.5 years and have not spend a single shiny nickel on it except oil changes and washer fluid and drive it every single day. Of course it took about three months of searching to find it.

Re: Looking for tow vehicle

I am thinking if you are that concerned, why would you spend 15k on a new vechicle? I got my 1994 MINT condition GMC seirra 4x4 with 80,000 miles for $2500! Runs like a dream and very very low insurance costs. I am thinking keep the escape and get a good used tow rig on the cheap side. Many people don't like two vechicles, but I like having my daily driver be a car and my tow vechicle be a truck I can use for trips to the dump and work around the house too. just my .02

I can see why. I looked around a little and there is only one with the 6L engine with in 300 miles of me and it's 297 miles away.

Re: Looking for tow vehicle

Go to Consumer Reports and check out their transmission ratings. I've had bad luck with transmissions in the past and after looking at Consumer Reports they were (sure enough...) rated extremely bad. At $2,500-$3,500 per rebuild/replacement it really sucks.

One thing I now do is change my transmission fluid about every 40,000 miles. Not a drain, a complete flush of the system. It's really not that expensive. I also installed a transmission temperature gauge on my tow vehicle. I will never tow without one of these every again. Heat is what kills transmissions more than anything else as it breaks down the oil and it doesn't lubricate as well.
