did some rebuild work on a qd-20 10hp. included l/u seal kit-something still leaks, upper water tube grommet- a pain in this motor and dont know if i got it right, carb rebuild, had powerhead off-did new upper carbon seal but not new lower just o-rings.
had out running and able to set top speed fine water is coming out exhaust so at least some is going through. could adjust low speed fine when warm. lean cough when restarted cold-could just be faulty packing job on my end-the needles were a little moist. anyway drained lower unit to see if seals ok and sure enough had water in it. dropped l/u and inside of exhaust housing wet-screwed up that upper grommet or leaking someewhere else. however, the driveshaft was also covered i black sooty grease all the way up to the o-ring at the splines-splines still had light coat of grease o put on.
was thinking that driveshaft could only get this way from 2 things since it is sealed at water pump. first is that the driveshaft seal in the l/u is where my leak is and i was seeing gear lube or i have a lower crankcase leak. but this was not the mocha colored grease that was coming out the l/u-black with gas smell. there are also two small relief holes at the upper end of the exhaust housing that are seeping oil. if lower crankshaft leaking, this may have also been contributing to the sneeze? was running 16-1 oil as has a new piston and rings and carb was set rich at onset. know i have more than 1 issue here, but thinking one is possibly lower crankshaft leak-is there a way to tell? compression is even in both cylinders and measures the same as in both of my other qd motors. thoughts? sorry for the long post.
