did some rebuild work on a qd-20 10hp. included l/u seal kit-something still leaks, upper water tube grommet- a pain in this motor and dont know if i got it right, carb rebuild, had powerhead off-did new upper carbon seal but not new lower just o-rings.
had out running and able to set top speed fine water is coming out exhaust so at least some is going through. could adjust low speed fine when warm. lean cough when restarted cold-could just be faulty packing job on my end-the needles were a little moist. anyway drained lower unit to see if seals ok and sure enough had water in it. dropped l/u and inside of exhaust housing wet-screwed up that upper grommet or leaking someewhere else. however, the driveshaft was also covered i black sooty grease all the way up to the o-ring at the splines-splines still had light coat of grease o put on.
was thinking that driveshaft could only get this way from 2 things since it is sealed at water pump. first is that the driveshaft seal in the l/u is where my leak is and i was seeing gear lube or i have a lower crankcase leak. but this was not the mocha colored grease that was coming out the l/u-black with gas smell. there are also two small relief holes at the upper end of the exhaust housing that are seeping oil. if lower crankshaft leaking, this may have also been contributing to the sneeze? was running 16-1 oil as has a new piston and rings and carb was set rich at onset. know i have more than 1 issue here, but thinking one is possibly lower crankshaft leak-is there a way to tell? compression is even in both cylinders and measures the same as in both of my other qd motors. thoughts? sorry for the long post.

Re: Lower Crankshaft Seal Leaking?

I think you're just seeing unburnt fuel/oil which would be the clear result of running 16:1 and a little rich. Seems to me that the break-in mix should be 24:1 for that guy, but extra lube isn't going to hurt it - except for the plugs.

Anyway, you had a chance to have a look at the lower crank seal when you had the powerhead off. If it looked good then it was good. But you're right - if it's bad you'll get a very rough idle and some strange behavior. In my experience, the bottom cyl will run very lean at idle and will probably not fire at all until the rpms come up a bit. The evidence will be in the plugs - there'll be a difference. Wet if just idling and leaner than the top if you cut the engine directly after running WOT.
Hope this helps!

Re: Lower Crankshaft Seal Leaking?

paul, thanks for the reply. ran the heavy oil as thought would help seal the new rings. knew i would be getting excess-just not on the driveshaft. only reason that i suspect the carbon seal is that the driveshaft on this motor is completely enclosed-from the water pump, which has a tube with o-rings, all the way to the powerhead, where the o-ring on the driveshaft goes into the powerhead. the exhaust housing has a built in tube between these two areas. doesnt seem that anything at all is supposed to get in there-heavy oil or running rich or not.that is why i thought the crankshaft seal.
lower carbon seal looked ok but i could only find 1 at the time of putting back together. top was trashed so i used it in top and i reused the bottom. might be a case of haste makes waste/penny wise, pound foolish. anyway, i took the powerhead off again as i kinda knew i was gonna have to,to fix anything i screwed up-torn down car engines but never 2 cycles. will find carbon seal and replace it. will also now paint it. has been a great learning experience in understanding this one and keeping up my other two qd's.
