Lower crankshaft seal spring 72 Johnson 6HP

The spring that was in my lower crank seal was broken when I pulled my powerhead out. It was already rusted, and I don't know if it broke when I pulled it or if it was already broken.

I was at our local hardware store yesterday to pick up some lock washers when I spied a nice stock of springs, at a nice price.

That got me thinking, that maybe, just maybe I could get a new spring there.

Does anyone know the size and spring rate of the lower seal spring?

Are you referring to the round spring in the seal? Generally you replace the entire seal if that happens, the spring is part of the seal.

Sounds like you may have already had a hardware store spring installed (rusted & broken). The proper spring should be installed which is part number 303357, available at any dealership.

Ah it's that spring, Joe called it . While you are in there replace the o-ring p#303347 and the top seal p#303355. Replace any other part in the setup that is worn. It is important that this entire assembly be working or you will eventually get water in the powerhead.

Thanks guys. I had planned on replacing the the seals anyway. I'll add an OEM spring to that list. :)

That's the one.

Now I've read that I am supposed to either glue or use sealant between the Gasket (303355) and the Plate (303356). Is that correct?

No sealer.... just oil.

Oil it is. I assume 2 stroke oil will suffice?

Know what? I've always glued the gasket to the plate because as I remember they were at the factory. But I've just now gone through 3 service manuals (two factory issue) and not one of them even mentions it. So, I guess it is believe whatever you want.

But just for the record, my theory is that the plate needs to stand still while the carbon rotates under spring pressure against the under side. Anything to help hold it stationary is beneficial. Just my 2c that won't even buy a cup of coffee.

The carbon-to-plate juncture is automatically lubricated by the oil that you put in the gas when it is running.

Just curious F R. What do you glue it with? Gasket sealer?

I too have a service manual (for a 77 6HP, bought the wrong manual based on incorrect ID plate), and it shows the seal, but mentions no adhesive.
