Another thought and something to research but if as you say the boat will be outside and wet then it might be more advantageous to use vynil on the decking instead of carpet which will aslo be more water resistant. I think the costs are about the same.

Re: Lund Pro V Restore or Sell?

rabid,

my aluminum star-craft im restoring and customizing right now has WAY worse dings and dents then that... With just simple proper cleaning priming and painting it looks brand new and awesome. I would restore that Lund in a heart beat especially taken the memories of it included. Its a lot of fun to, good project for people whom like projects. just check the decking and transom, IMHO if those are still good just strip it prime it paint it what color you would like and decal if needed. After that re carpet it and you got yourself a new boat.

this is what i did with mine with only spending $150 so far (i did get the aluminum trim angle for free though), here is the link

Vinyl Vs Carpet.

I can agree with you guys that Vinyl would be the more practical choice, especially when I'm river fishing. That mud is some god awful stuff when its ground into carpet. However, I was literally raised in a carpeted lund...sleept on those floors and a pile of life jackets constantly when I was a kid. I'm going to go Carpet for personal reasons :)

@cdavid202,

You did an awesome job stripping that boat, maybe I missed it but what did you use for striper? I suppose I will need to take it all the way down to alumn before I repaint eh?

I don't blame you on the carpet,..

I put vinyl in my Alumacraft when I redid it and it's just okay, It's holding up fine and the maintenance is low,...

However it gets hot as all blazes in the summer sun,

And it's slippery as all get out when I'm fishing in a snow storm,...

Make sure your new carpet is OPEN LOOP so hooks don't get caught in it,....

@Rabid

i actually used 4 diffrent kinds but the original zip strip worked the best. Chem gloves, zip srtip, a puddy knife and some scotch bright pads along with massive amounts of elbow grease and time and it will look great man.

That paint job did turn out awesome thiker, I'll have questions when I get around to that part! Started building the engine mount last night. Boat comes home on Sunday! Does anyone know if the standard lifting eye for a merc will work with my 1990 merc or have they changed over the years?

Ill start a thread for the restoration in a week or so once things are under way!

Lund Pro V - Gary Roach Edition = Restoration

Lund Pro V - Gary Roach Edition = Restoration

I meant to post this as I went along but all of my spare time was consumed by the project…and pesky not boat stuff. So here’s the short version.

Removed and dismantled pretty much everything, for the most part is was exactly as described on this forum. Which is to say hard, but rewarding. The foam was time consuming and back breaking and absolutely nothing compared to removing the rotten transom.

I mistakenly scheduled 4hour of work to remove the rotten old bastard. It took two days, we had to keep resting the drill because it would over heat, then the crowbars, and the fire, and the screaming! It would have been easier if it had been entirely rotten and just fell away. But it was partially rotten and partially intact, wet and swollen into place…had to be chipped away one little bit at a time. I can see now why you might disassemble the entire rear of the boat to get it out.
But much has been achieved, the new transom was cut and painfully smashed into place, then we riveted and drilled and remounted the engine! Honestly I believe the hardest part is behind me. It would not have been possible without the information obtained on this site…Thanks everyone!

Here are some pictures of the boat and the progress (OR THEY WOULD BE IF THEY WERENT TOO LARGE). To date the engine transom is re-installed, about 80% of the floor boards are cut. Yes I am a sucker and used marine grade plywood which will be/is coated in epoxy. It’s a piece of mind thing….lets not blow it out of proportion. The floatation foam has been ordered.

This week or next I will test for leaks, by filling the boat with water. Order the navy blue 16 oz carpet. Have the tear in the side welded, and worry about how to rewire the panels!

I will start with two questions:

1. Does anyone know what brand of carpeting lund puts in their boats. I’m sure there are a lot of good ones out there, but I would like to match that same blue exactly. Digital cameras have a hard time with shades of Navy blue look awful on the internet.

2. I have a ton of bolts and screws that will go into the carpet, they were all hidden by the old carpet. However when I have done this myself the srews tend to sit on top of the carpet and look awful. Any thoughts?
Below are a few pictures, if you have any questions about the project please post and I will try to answer them.

Might ask a MOD to merge this thread w/ the other one you linked. The 90days rule is for everyone but whoever started the thread, so as a continuation & to answer the did he or didn't he keep & restore the Lund in that thread questions..........

Can't answer the Lund navy carpet Q

Pix didn't post.....

What screws are you running thru the carpet? Screwing the accessories & seats down to the carpet, the screws tighten down on the mount, not the carpet....... Are you redoing the deck &/or storage boxes that were constructed 1st & carpeted after installation in the boat? Then the screws would be under the carpet........

Lots of exposed fasteners ON TOP of the new carpet, doesn't sound like a great idea

No pix makes it hard for me to understand the carpet & screw question.......

You could try calling Lund about the carpet,......I'm guessing that they wont know for sure as I'm sure they have purchased from many different venders over the years,.........

I know Cabelas has a bunch of different grades of marine carpet,...

If you have a store close maybe they have it in stock and you could go see it??,...........

Re: Lund Pro V - Gary Roach Edition = Restoration

Thanks guys, I keep trying to up load the pictures of the project....but they are all too large and when I reformat them they turn to crap....Ill figure it out shortly.

I do think I will go with Corinthian carpet...thanks Thiker! Perhaps I can explain the issues with the screws a little better.

1. On my lund boat the floor is mad of panels of plywood, carpet was wrapped around these glued and stapled. They were then bolted or screwed into place.

2. In the orginal condition the screws were hidden by the knap of the carpet and essentially invisible.

When I have replaced them the screws sat up too high and were visible. Is there a trick to hiding them in the carpet?

There only answer I have is to use a countersink and level the bolts/screws with the floor.

Thanks!

If you're not now, try using PhotoBucket. I's free and pretty easy to use and post up the pictures to here.

When I screwed my floor down I first drilled a pilot hole by doing so the screws counter sunk and was hidden by the carpet

Best way to post pics is to open a Free Photobucket account, upload your pics, then select the IMG Code to copy and Paste your pics into your iBoats Thread. I agree with the Counter sink if you want it smooth. Some like to have their stainless screw heads exposed and do so by using Trim Washers.
