m/w sea king 12 hp.how do i get the top off.

i cant tell you what year it is.i believe in the 60s somewhere.i cant get the d---- top off to give you any numbers.it feels loose like i just havent turned the right knob.is there a trick to this?it has a pull rope on top and a pull type knob and a large turnable knob and a small turnable knob.there are screws in the sides.

The plate is usually on top of the mounting bracket.Is that a full gear shift model?If it is I have the 5 hp same basic setup.The 2 sides are seperate from the top.In the center front usually a high speed mix knob and low speed knob Usually no need to remove except to prevent damage.You will have to remove the choke knob.
Sides have 2 screws Don't remove the side trim screws.Just the larger side screws.Side screws may be retained by clips no need to remove.Loosen screws.Sides should be loose and separated. It will appears side won't clear shifter,it will.I believe forward or reverse. You have to diddle with it.
You can remove the rewind (4 screws) but not tank Fuel line won't allow.
But with tank loose maybe sides will be easier.

I have thesame motor, the above poster is correct remove the twao sides and then you can get the top off. Any luck finding parts for yours?

I believe these motors share some ignition and cooling and some carb parts with the E/J motors similar years.New ignition and cooling parts are available using E/J applications.There are many Gale built private brands that are identical with the Gale motors.
