Odds are the swivel bracket bushing area is full of corrosion/rust. Once that is disassembled and cleaned, it can be greased.

how would i go about taking it apart ? can i pull the lower mount off and then lift it out? or would i be better off taking the power head loose too? - i have an engine crane?

If the motor has been sitting that long it's either corrosion or the greese has hardened. Take apart and clean than greese. When I was in the navy every now and than we would have to work on a j-bar davit that hadn't been maintained properly and the greese hardned. We'd have to hook up a crane to it and heat it with an aceteylne torch to get it out. Man, when those thing finally let go, they would pop out and fly 50' in the air. Lol, that was the only time I'd ever drop a lit torch and run like hell:)

Heat is the accepted method to break it loose. But you do have to be careful or you will have exploding aluminum. As far as taking it apart...That is the "best" way. You do that by looking at that service manual and following the method for dis assembly. Or you can download a free parts book from www.internetoutboards.com, see the relationship of the parts and then start turning wrenches.

Re: m60b steering bracket is REALLY stiff

thanks guys...

well i took the power head off and then the mid section off the bracket
then i heated and beated to get the lower mount off the shaft -might need to get a new one of those as it was really stuck and i had to cut the lower engine mounts off because the bolts woulnt come out im taking it to welding school tomorrow to take the acetlyne torch to the bolts and do a little build up welding

i got the shaft knocked up about an inch so im almost home there im thinking im gonna hook the engine crane to the shaft and lift it out that way so i dont booger up the bottom end of the shaft
now i need:
lower engine mounts
power head gasket
possibly the lower bracket

good news is before i did all this teardown i fired it up today she purrs like a kitten :D (i rebuilt the carbs earlier this week)
question though?
i put a new housing and impeller in it changed the gear oil (looked good) should i go ahead and do the thermostat ?

Re: m60b steering bracket is REALLY stiff

themostat opened and closed nicely ... the engine crane was the ticket for pulling out that shaft (that and a little heat) i got it out, cleaned it and the bushing and inside the pivot(the lower one was cracked) and then lubed it up and smacked it back in with a few good wacks from my bfh now it flops freely from side to side :D so...

pvanv ?? whats your price on a lower mount pn# 3f361-4110m and a power head gasket
pn#3f301-3010m any chance on getting a lower mount used??what does a lower bushing run?

Re: m60b steering bracket is REALLY stiff

3F301-3010m is superceded to 3F3S013010
3F3614110M MOUNT BRACKET $139.18
3F3S013010 ENGINE BASE $288.35
Both parts are presently out of stock, I would have to call Tohatsu to determine ETA. I don't know when or whether they will be getting any from Japan.

The driveshaft housing gasket is:
3A3610120M GASKET $8.67

The exhaust gasket is:
353023120M GASKET,EXHAUST $1.92

The base gasket itself is something you will need to make yourself, unless you find one on the dusty back shelf of an old-time dealer:
353013030M GASKET, ENGINE BASE-NO LONGER AVAILABLE
