mechanic scam?

I have twin Johnson (carbureted) 175hp Oceanrunners. The mechanic told me all cylinders in both engines have 30 PSI compression; however, the engines start right away and run great. He claims to have used two different gages. Is this possible? What would cause such a reading? Am I being scammed?<br />Thanks.<br />Joseph

30 PSI on 12 out of 12 cylinders?? Not very likely.<br /><br />Engines do not break or wear out that way. All cylinders being equal is a sign of a healthy engine.<br /><br />He may have misread something, you may have misunderstood him, or he may be totally incompetent.<br /><br />I think anyone using that claim as a ripoff would be colossally stupid about 2 stroke engines.<br /><br />Ask him to clarify.<br /><br />Good luck.

There's something wrong here, both motors' would not likely show 30 lbs. across the board, nor whould they likely show 130 lbs. Engines will not start, and run great with 30 lbs. compression. Did he say what the low, and high reading's were?

A guy is interested in buying the boat and wanted the engines compression tested. I had to put the boat back in the water to run it to prove to him that the engines start and run great. I bought a compression gage and start switch last night, so I'm gonna do the test myself. Will keep everyone informed. Thanks for everyone's input. <br />Joseph

Hook up a garden hose or do it in the water so you don't damage the water pump while you're testing it. Also ground the plugs wires. Who is running the betting pool on the numbers he ends up with?

Obviously the guy was checking them with 30 lb water pressure gauges and each motor pegs each gauge.
