Re: mercruiser 170 wont stop cranking

i did some more poking around with my meter and the wire does turn to yellow/red after the big round connector. this boat is wired so weird. some wires change color when they go through different plugs.

i think i might of found an issue. when i tested the ignition switch(which is new but had been sitting) it was showing continuity between the bat and ignition circuit with the key off. the starter side was fine. After pulling the switch it works fine now.

do you think i can get away with using this solenoid or is it my problem? the white/green goes to switch then goes to a black wire that goes back into harness. is it designed to cut ignition or somthing?

after removing some tape i also found a black wire with an eyelet on it. my motor is converted to an alternator FYI

Which wire? The white/red? Is so, then it's wired correctly.

That would keep the engine running when you tried to shut it off, but wouldn't keep the starter engaged.

Try this. If that white/red is actually the yellow red wire in disguise, hook it up to the starter solenoid itself, in place of the other yellow red wire, and see if it works like it should.

ok so... it is the starter itself. I disconnected EVERYTHING but the main battery cable and used a screwdriver to jump the solenoid post and it just keeps on spinning. i dont understand why because when i remove the starter and hook up jumper cables it turns on and off perfectly. unless my entire engine block is energized which i doubt because there would be a major short when i connect the battery.

FIXED!!! installed the old starter and it stops right when i release the key. all this hassle because some guy didnt do his job rebuilding the starter! i think im gonna have my "reman" starter gone through by a reputable local shop so i have a spare.
