Mercruiser Shift Cutout Switch seems wonky

Hi:
My project boat is a collection of a number of brought-together parts from other boats, but I'll try to describe relevant parts as best as I can:
5.7 GM crate engine - non-vortec, new SEI outdrive to accommodate the engine, shift cables came with my boat, which originally had a 3L mercruiser powerplant installed. Shift cutout switch came off of a trashed 1989 Sea ray w/ 5.7L powerplant (also where I got my heads/manifolds/tin/etc.).

Know that I also have a new shifter - which, for all I know, may have set-up improperly - causing this issue.

At https://vimeo.com/341121296 - I've posted a video of the way my switch is actuated when shifting - can someone tell me if this is the way it's supposed to work (I think not!), and perhaps offer guidance on how to make it work properly?

Seems to me this switch should only momentarily "bump" short when I go into neutral, right??

Thanks in-advance!!

start the motor and do that again, Any movement on land with no load on the prop means a new lower cable is needed in most cases or corrosion in the shift linkage. when was the drive removed last?

Thanks for your quick reply, BT Doctor. OK - I'll do that - I'm assuming dry, the outdrive with muffs on. I do have a 100gal tank so I can partially load the prop if that would help. The H2O splashes out of the tank very fast, but I can get a few seconds under load.

Outdrive was installed new last year, but is still under construction. I've only had the boat out a few times (last fall), to see if it would float!

you cannot run it in a tank put the muffs on, run at idle and test shift. If it moves on land you need a new lower cable or find the corrosion

Ayuh,.... The boat has to be "In the water" for the shift switch to work,..... yer tank won't supply a "Load",.......

If the switch moves at All, when not "In the water",.....
As BD says, ya got a cable/ linkage problem,.....
