Hello Guys,

I am having a issue with a connection problem in my main ENGINE-HELM connection. The key starter has been acting up (checked all connections behind dash..definitely a harness problem), but if I play with the harness while someone is turning the key, the engine turns right over. This harness has two large pins..black and red, and then has a pin pattern around the outside. The starter wire is yellow, but I cannot see what Pin it is tied to.. Does anyone know what pin number is linked to the starter? Also, I want to clean the female side of the plug as I think its a corrosion issue. Any tips to clean? Pipe Cleaner?

Thanks,
Joe

Is this the harness plug at the engine you will wiggle and the engine will crank over or a plug at the dash?

If it is a plug at the dash then the wiring was done by the boat manufacture and it is hard to know how they set it up because there is no standard electrical harness that all boat manufactures will use at the dash. Even from model year to model year wiring plugs can change. The wire colors are generally standard but all types of different plugs are used. Maybe try cleaning it with electrical contact cleaner or break clean something that will evaporate away cleanly. If it is a round rubber plug like MerCruiser uses back at the engine you could put a hose clamp around the connector and tighten it down that a lot of times will fix a loose connection with some pin types of plugs. Also if you know exactly what plug has the loose connection cut the yellow or yellow wire with the red tracer before and after the connector and add a small piece of wire in the space between and hard wire the one lead. It is not pretty but that will get you running again.

Tried several times to clean my plug but still had issues. Main reason is no one ever used silicone grease on the plug before putting it together so it corroded, I finally gave up and replaced them both. The Ye/Red goes to your slave solenoid and comes out on pin 7

Here is the pin out
