2 questions

1 is there any upgrade parts that you would suggest. It seems this little engine is in a ton of boats and does great with the set up gm put in it but with my limited experance i thought i would ask

2. any suggestions for were to get my parts at the best price

Re: mercruser 3.0 rebuild parts

140 hp is the limit of that block. Merc pumped it up to 150 recently when they added injection, and broke lots of blocks! That's why you won't find much 'go faster gear' for them....

As it's a common-a-garden GM engine, any GM engine parts shop will be able to help you. Just be aware of the parts that are specifically 'Marine'. They need to stay they way (for safety reasons)! That's anything to do with electrical, fuel, gaskets, water pump and core plugs.

I am glad this is a forum so that i get such great answers like this one. NO offense to others that have great input

No offence taken..... :D
(and I'm also guessing you don't consider post #2 in this thread as 'great input' either....)

Re: mercruser 3.0 rebuild parts

are the parts for a standard boar 3.0 and a gm 2.5 interechangeable. I understand the cam is different, but can I purchase pistons rings and bearings for a 2.5 and they should fit this mercruiser 3.0 block

Pistons will not fit...
2.5L is bore is 3.875", 3.0L bore is 4.000"

Bearings are also different.

I hope this has been 'great input' for you....

Re: mercruser 3.0 rebuild parts

There's not much common between the 2.5L and 3.0L; accessories, tins and a few internal parts. The 3.0L is a high performance 2.5L, stroked and bored, different head... Mercruiser (actually GM) all ready did the "hot-rodding".

I wouldn't recommend going with any "high performance" parts as I found out long ago, high performance does not equal high reliability. Balancing the rotating assembly will make the engine run smoother. Port matching the head and manifold, and cleaning up the intake/exhaust runners might make an additional 1-2HP... I played with the head anyway.......

I bought my engine kit off Ebay ($400-500) and everything was good quality, but if I had to do it again, I would get the parts from the machine shop as Bondo suggested. The parts might cost a little more, but if there are any irregularities, they can deal with it during the rebuild. Plus, you are supporting their business which could come back to you, cheaper machining cost...

Ayuh,.... There are 2, GM, 2.5l motors,...

The 2.5l, 153ci motor is an old Chevy that's used in old boats....

The 2.5l, 151ci motor is a GM/ Pontiac motor, 'n has been used in cars, 'n trucks for years...
The 2.5l that's been used in cars for years, is Completely Different than Any of the motors used in boats...
