Mercrusier 4.3l LX 1994 - Starter issues

Boat is a Bryant 19".

We replaced the starter today - after an R/I with an aftermarket starter we have power from the battery as indicated with a test light, however no power running to anything else.

Purple - ignition
Yellow/Red - ?? Breaker
Orange - Trim

Nothing gets power.

I appreciate any insight into this problem - TIA

You left a wire off the starter, should have 3, battery cable, red wire, orange wire

Everything is connected - red coming from the battery is live. Jumping the yellow/red wire and the red from the battery cranks the motor.

on the starter where you put the main battery cable should be 2 other wires a red and a orange.orange is from the alt, red is the main system power to the boat
Test for power at the 50A circuit breaker

Yes - the red/orange/red wire is all on the same terminal on the starter. We are getting juice from the battery - yet nothing is being distributed anything else.

I don't think so - the breaker isn't popped out.

I can't budge it either.

then recheck all the wires, one is missing or broken. power comes from the starter to the main breaker.

Do you have a square fuse on the main terminal of your starter soleoid, if so, it may be blown. Check it.

Still leads back to the wires on the starter,double check.If it worked before you did the work then something was missed

Thanks for your help doctur.

Here is a recap of the situation:

New starter installed.
Red/Orange/Red wires tightly fastened on the solenoid terminal
No starter solenoid fuse present
Purple and yellow/red wire tightly fastened to P and S terminals on the starter
50a breaker wont budge (looks good) but no juice

The only juice we have is from the battery - not even the trim works and it is on the same terminal as the live wire coming from the battery.

I obviously missed something - but everything is as it was with the broken starter. Unless we toasted some hardware installing it - but again all the fuses are good.

purple/yellow to the small left lug
yellow /red to the small right hand lug
red, orange, main battery cable , red popwer trim lead, all go to the top terminal.

Did we blow the starter solenoid?

solenoid has no bearing on where the power comes from. the main breaker gets it`s power from the main battery cable when connected at the starter solenoid. You proved the battery ground cable was good by jumping the solenoid to spin the motor.what is odd is that the trim wont work even though you say it goes to the main battery cable lug.
jumper the solenoid again ,maybe the neg cable on the battery got loose?

Odd indeed -

There are two small terminals on the battery - the ground is connected to the battery by a small wingnut. The larger neg terminal on the battery has nothing connected.

I guess I can try to fasten the trim power directly to the positive terminal on the battery - but nothing else works.

Its like - nothing is wrong with this boat - but it won't start.
