Re: Merc 140hp 71 Compression

fishr 450 for the head to be machined and valve job,

Exactly what are they doing for $450? ($450 seems excessive)

I paid $250 10+ years ago for a 140 head rebuild, but all parts were replaced including the hardened exhaust seats and high performance undercut valves. 2 years ago they did a valve job on it, only springs and retainers were replaced, and it cost $180, which seemed a bit high to me, but oh' well... The total machine shop bill from 2 years ago was around $500, including a crank grind, tanking block, boring the block, pistons pressed, cam gear pressed, cam bearings installed.

I know this isn't 10 years, or 2 years ago, but $450 seems high for head work, even with the economy in the crapper and prices going up.

Rod inserts = piston pins?

Re: Merc 140hp 71 Compression

well 450 is on the high end if there is more then the basic stuff or anything he went high on purpose based on the fact he really had no clue what the condition or anything about the head was so ill get a good price either way my boat mech. wanted 750+ on the low end

Holy Schmoly Ryan. You've got this whole motor apart and you want to hone the cylinders and slap it back together. My friend, do it right and mike the cylinders and then when you see the results are a little weird have the machine shop mike it. Then set you up with a working bottom end.

Re: Merc 140hp 71 Compression

What will happen is you will hone it and put it back together and those worn out crank shaft bearings will continue to let that crank slap around. Then youll pull it again and replace what you should have done the first time.

Well in all fairness not everyone has an inside diameter cylinder mike handy. I worked in a combustion engine machine shop when i was a youngster.

Re: Merc 140hp 71 Compression

ohhhh noooo nooo artificical i think somewhere up there i said i was gonna re do the bearings and everything basicly a whole rebuild short of new pistons and boring im doing this right the first time its my project that i wanna say i did it right lol so if it fails i cant blame anyone els lol (i have a habit im tryin to brake doin that). But in other news i drooped the head off today he will give me a call tommorow or monday with a realistic price then when i clean everything up and hone it ill have them tank the motor so its gonna be perfectly clean. Trust me when i say i wanna do it right so if you see something i might have left out please point it out and ill look into it, but thats my update for tonight. also do you think for the strendrive it would be better to just buy a new unit for 1300 and just sell my old one as is for like 300 since i dont know the condition besides last i knew it worked fine. let me know thanks

p.s. did i mention the out drive would be comming from IBoats.com (gotta love our great forum provider) with a 3 year waranty

I dont think you are supposed to hone anything untill it comes out of the tank clean. Hopefully the machine shop you took it to will tell you what you need.

Re: Merc 140hp 71 Compression

ooh ok see thats why i asked here because this is my first rebuild and i figured you honed first then tank it to clean any shavings blah blah blah u get it lol thanks when i get the head prices ill ask them about that and how much a tank down would cost any one out there done it recently to give me a price? also are there any performance upgrades i could do i asked about port and polish he said dont waste the money for this engine he said he rebuilt plenty and it doesnt add enough noticeable power to money ratio lol let me know

Thanks ryan

Re: Merc 140hp 71 Compression

The shop i worked in i dont think we even charged for hot tanking. We made our money from telling you what you needed (and we didnt rip people off). Cleaning is minimal. This was in 1984 maybe we charged 15 bucks at the most. You have a cool little motor there.

They are referred to as .030 or "30 over" pistons, readily available, but kind of spendy though, probably $150 or more for the set.

Re: Merc 140hp 71 Compression

Thanks fisher actualy i just got back from my machine shop i decided to over bore it to 30 over and there gonna supply me all my parts (a lot cheaper) all for around $630 Dollars Now this includes the following parts and labor:
Hot Tank 65
freeze plugs 12
Bore and Hone 90
Pistons .030 $33x4
Rod Bearing 4.8x4
Main bearing 45
ALL GASKETS 147.00
Rings 48
Cam Bearings and instalation 18
Install Pistons on rods 12
So that brings my Grand total on the Rebuild to around 800 give or take.

Oh and on another note i was gonna pick my head up today and take it to my new shop cause i thought they hadnt even touched it, come to find out as i walked in the door they were tagging and bagging it. All for 153.5 includes brand new everything and cleaning the works!!!

Edit:
and it will all be done and ready for building on friday(gotta love getting the week off without asking for it)
