Re: Mercurys are fast! 1961 mercury 500

I stand corrected the TDC line on the flywheel is a straight liner and the line with a 0 on it is .235. My fluke Meter or Merc-o-tronic both read point flux from the mag. terminal, was the ign. switch disconnected or in the on position

was wondering why the line and o sounded a bit funny? yeah those matched up perfectly with my mag and flywheel.

therefore all i need to set is the max advance right?

how did it go? hook OHM meter to positive end to the ground out stud then negative to ground. then turn the motor over? is it running while im testing this?

As far as mid range bod it can be caused by a lean idle setting of the carbs opening to quickly.[/QUOTE]

when you mean lean idle setting of carbs? your saying that the pickups that move the carbs are to lean?

Yes all you need to do is set the timing with a OHM meter or a test light or even a buzz box like they use on older motorcycles. Yes a lean idle mixture can cause mid range bog, the other thing that can cause it is there is not enough clearance on the carb pickups and the carbs are opening before the engine is at Max spark advance.

Yup - ignition switch was off. That would ground out the points:eek:. I'll try again tomorrow with the ignition switch on. Thanks Laddies.

ahhhhhhhhhhh i think im going to cry:(

the upside is that the motor idles very nicely about 500-600 in gear and 700-800 out. by the way the needles are 1 1/2 turns out? both? is that fine?

most of the bog has gone away and not really noticable but it is still there. might be normal. im not sure since this is my first mercury.

a strange ive noticed about the motor is that i think as i accelerate, after the timing is maxed it accelerates very fast as the carbs i believe open at a fast rate. could this be because the pickup is to lean?

the bad news is that i believe my top motor mount is broken:( i just got back in from a run today. pulled the motor up and had a little bump. i thought? are the clamps loose? no..... so i pushed the motor back down and noticed it made a squishy noise.... pull back then bump.

what should i do?

motor mounts hard to replace? both of them?

why would they fail? im having second thoughts on about this mercury. omc's didnt fail.....

how much does a typical power head weigh? would i take everything off when taking it off? magneto carbs starter and such?
