Ok today I was out test driving after installing a new coil. Think (hoping) I got the engine squared away as it ran like a champ today.

Well the trim is sucking a lot of power and making the outdrive faulter at higher RPMs, so I was messing with the trim today in the middle of the bay and just checking somethings when I was just sitting at idle, I had trimmed it almost all of the way up. Engine started.

I heard something and when going to investigate it I went and stood on the swim deck and the out drive sounded like something was inside and was vibrating very bad. I know its hard to explain sounds online but thats what it really sounded like.

I stuck my hand down and held the prop, nope not that prop, zincs and a couple different things on the out side of the out drive seeing if something had come loose. Couldnt find anything that made it stop.

If I put the drive down it went away, unless it was because I couldnt hear it anymore cause the drive was under water but It was loud engouh I would think I would have heard it.

I turned the engine off then back on and it was still there if I put the drive up. I started driving slow for about 10 mins then stopped, put it in idle and checked and no noise now.

So I start back up and Im about 1 mile from the no wake part that goes back to my dock. I get up on plane and right before I open the secondaries I hear a loud half bang half ping.

I know it wasnt but it almost sounded like something shot up out of the intake and hit the flame arrestor. I checked and there wasnt a mark on the inside of the flame arrestor and nothing in there or the carb. I dunno what it was.

I made it all the way to the dock and when I got there put the drive most the way up while the engine was running and there was no ratttling sound. Sounded normal.

Anyways the boat ran great still and the outdrive noise is unknown. There was no slipping of gear or slamming into gear, or anything like that. The boat is actually running so great right now besides the trim pump sucking so much juice. I really hope this isnt the start of something bad for me and good for SEI. lol

When you say you had the drive up....

How far up? Like you used the trim up switch until the limiter stoped it at the safe up position?

Or did you have the outdrive all the way up in it's trailer position?

What you heard was the u-joints banging into themselves from being "hyperextended" if you will. The joint, just like our joints can only flex so much. The U-joint will bang into itself when you have the outdrive up too far. Never run the engine when the drive is up.

I'm pretty sure I don't have a trailer option on my boat. I just have an up and a down switch. I have run it that far up before I'm pretty sure. I might just take it out this weekend and see how it goes. Keep my ears open.

At your helm.....

Do you have a trim indicator gage?

I do but it doesn't work. It stays in the almost up position and when I hit either the down or up button it flickers but doesn't move.

I asked a while ago if anyone knew how to fix it and the answer I got was that they break often and to just learn to lsiten to it and know when to stop pushing the button.

I know how to do this now. I know when it's down or up all the way. I'm just saying. I don't think it should affect the engine. Something is wrong.

sounds like you had it up too far and the U joint was hitting the gimbal housing.
You can break stuff like that.
You should correct your trim limit switch. There will be a dimension in the manual for safe maximum length of the trim rams when running the engine.
you set the limit switch to stop at that dimension or less. Don't run the engine with the rams out any further. A brief accidental start doesn't usually harm anything.

Get your trim switch and sensors fixed! Running the out drive to far up WILL make you visit SEI.

How does one fix the trim sender? My limit switch works fine but the indicator and guage do not. What is the most common problem with these.

As far as I know there is no trim limit switch on an OMC Cobra, the owners manual says that you can operate the boat with the drive all the way up ONLY at ildle and less than 1000 rpms...if you forget and start the boat with it trimmed up like this it will make noise and vibrate but that will stop as soon as you trim down and reduce idle speed. If you are still getting noise or binding then I'd want to pull off the drive to check the ujoints, they may we worn to the point where they need to be replaced.

The trim sender is on the starboard side of the pivot housing if you turn the drive to the port side of the boat you can see it. The factory routing of the wires makes replacing it very difficult on some installations because it goes through thte transom assembly and the wires come out near the steering arm inside the boat...

My mechanic modified mine by drilling a hole in the side of the transom mount and then running the trim sender wire up the transom of the boat like a transducer cable. Makes changing it an easy job which is good because they only last 1-2 seasons here in salt. BTW the OE one is no longer available but Sierra makes an aftermarket version (got it here on Iboats)...
