mixing gas

I recently purchased a 1987 procraft with 150 mercury, the fuel injecter has been removed, it has a built in gas tank and was wondring if it would be better to mix oil in a 6 gallon portable tank first, or just put in boat tank. Am going out to test on river tomorrow to find out if it is a deal or no deal, thanks for the help...........

IF the self mixing oil injector has been removed you will have to premix in tank.

If you didnt put the gas thats in the boat in then I would drain and refill.

yes I did drain the tank, didnt know how long had been in there, but was wondering if it would be better to mix outside of boat tank or does it really not matter as long as is proper mixture, thanks, Scott

It is better to mix outside of the tank, but if you do it right, either way will work.

To mix in the built in tank, first be sure that there is enough room for the amount of gas you intent to put in.

Put the required amount of oil in according to the manufacturers instructions. Try not to drip any oil near the top of the filler tube.

Place the pump from the gas station into the fill nozzle and pump in a gallon or so. I say use a gas pump to mix because of the pressure of which the fuel pumps out - it will assist in the fuel and oil mixing together. A regular jerry can will not.

Slow the flow down and pull the nozzle out a little to rinse any oil from the inner sidewalls of the fill tube (do not spill).

Insert nozzle fully and top off with required amount of gas.

If the required amount of gas will not fit, you will have a rich oil condition, and a lean gas condition.

Add gas and oil in 3 gallon or 6 gallon increments depending on tank size. Add 1/2 pint of oil, and 3 gal of fuel. Another 1/2 pint and 3 gallons. Or to speed things up, at 1 pint of oil and 6 gallons of fuel. You really don't need to worry about the oil and fuel actually mixing as even insignificant boat movement will mix the two and once mixed, it doesn't separate.

I've seen oil put in on top of gas in a built in tank just sit in the bottom and not mix well.

I would carry a small can, say 1 gallon. Add the oil you will need for this fill up to the 1 gallon can, for instance 26 oz for 10 gallons. Add a little less than a gallon of gas, shake it up, dump it in the boat, then put the rest of the ten gallons directly in the boat. With this premix a small amount of boat movement, or even the turbulence of filling will mix it up.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
