Re: More air

Only if the air was significantly restricted before, Ron, and then your mixture would be off.

I assume you have a JohnnyRude carbureted engine.

Re: More air

As JB says, it depends on what motor you have. Some do have a slight restriction and can benifit slightly by some modifications. Others (loopers) will actually run worse if you change the direction or ammount of air. Some loopers will actually lean out and stick a piston if you remove the air silencer.

Its 1993 175 johnson faststrike,I heard on the mercs some of the guys raising there intake fins on the cowl up to boost there horsepower and was wondering if the same worked on a johnson?

Re: More air

I wondered if you were talking about your motor.

Here's a real simple test. Make a given run with the hood on. Then remove the hood and see what happens. I doubt that anything will change but you never know.

Re: More air

Yes i ws talking about the motor,i,ll do that,on the cowl the air goes in on top and at the back and then is channeled down to the bottom of the motor, seems it has to go around the motor to get to the carbs, would'nt this actually heat the air up more before entering the carbs?seems if i get air to the front of the motor sooner it would help, but i dont want to run to lean or stick a piston.

Re: More air

Those carbs are designed to pull air from behind the venturi and curl around. Look at the air silencer and youll see they went to great lengths to pull air from behind.

The carbs are calibrated for the air temp at that point. Inducing cooler air makes the motor leaner. many times when we change the intake flow on race motors we rejet to compensate.

Re: More air

ut it this way. If adding more ventilation to the motor is benificial, the manufacture would have done it in the first place.
