Re: Motor Siezed Today

Yes. That was another question. Which gear ratio do I need and what about the yoke length. Is that something I should be concerned with? Im not sure about how to select the proper unit.

Ayuh,... Shaft length don't apply in yer case,...

The V8s use the 1.50:1 ratio in most all cases,...

Only time I've seen the 1.65:1 with a V8 is with a 5.0l, pushin' a H U G E barge,...

Yer drive might be stamped with it's ratio,.... look up top, portside, near or under the decal,...

Do you have your drive serial number you can post?

Stamped into the portside Mercruiser sticker on the top left is says "150R" and on the top right is has "OC731742"

So, should I be looking at the 1.47 ratio unit?

You might want to double check those bellows too. That is the most likely spot for water to get to the driveshaft.

Re: Motor Siezed Today

Did a good search for the water leak. There were a few things that looked fishy. First of all, the mating gasket looked like it had been reused. The O ring on the bottom left also looked this way. Looked like it was bypassing water. Then upon a close inspection, the gimbal housing has a seal that looks like it works by pressure when the drive unit bolts up it comes in contact with the rubber seal. The seal had signs of good contact all the way around except for the bottom. Then I checked the mating surface on the drive itself and the same thing was present. The surface had a good shiny edge where it comes in contact with the rubber seal but at the bottom it was corroded. About 1 inch wide. I checked the boot (Bellows?) around the driveshaft and it looks intact and tight. No dry spots or cracks. Looks like a new drive, gimbal housing rear seal, oring and gasket and some proper maintenance should do the trick. Am I right here?

Do you know if bellows adhesive was used? If it were me I would probably do the full transom seal kit with the new drive just to be sure. How does the gimbal bearing feel?

I did see some adhesive on the inside where the bellows is clamped. I had this replaced a couple years ago. Looks like they did a good job after all. I think I should leave it alone. The bearing felt okay but if it was subjected to water I imagine I should replace it yes? Can it be pulled out through the driveshaft housing?

Re: Motor Siezed Today

You might call some shops. When I needed mine done I found a shop that would install for free if I bought it from him and the drive was off. Cost my $65 installed.

I cant imagine any shop would sell one for less than 2K. I will check though. I would be inclined to buy a used one if I could find one. Just to be sure. It looks like I cannot install anything other than a Generation 1. I have a 1989 Alpla 1 Gen1. Do I need to be sure to get another Gen 1?

Sorry, I guess I should have specified more. I was referring to the gimbal bearing.

Re: Motor Siezed Today

I found a guy in my area that has a used Alpha One that came off a 1987ish boat. This is a complete outdrive with trim cylinders. Said he would sell it to me for $100. Only problem is that is had a 4 cylinder motor. Here is the catch. I pulled apart the lower unit and it is free. It is the upper unit that seized up. I know the lower unit has been abused but until yesterday when all this happened it wasn't making any loud noises or anything. Still in the same condition as before. I am thinking of reinstalling it and buy some time if I can. Correct me if i'm wrong but it "IS" the lower unit that determines the gear ratio right? If so, I might be able to pick up this guys outdrive, take the upper unit and bolt it onto mine, replace the seals and gaskets, and run it knowing i'm on borrowed time. I would rather wait until I can afford to spend the money for a new outdrive. They are so easy to remove and replace Im not worried about the time. Do you guys think I might be okay here? I know it is not the best way to go about it but like I said. I don't want to part with $1500-$1700 at the moment.

Re: Motor Siezed Today

The upper is where the ratio is set.

ETA: You also don't want to be putting a good unit together with another unit that had it's mate blown. There will be metal parts floating around.

Re: Motor Siezed Today

Okay, well that sucks! Is there any way to offset the ratio of this used unit with a new prop? What will happen if I bolt up a unit that came off a 4 cylinder? Just curious. Haha, more than curious I guess. lol

Re: Motor Siezed Today

You could try with a bigger (pitch) prop but even if you get it close it will be in efficient. I don't know that you could find a prop that would prevent it from over-revving though.

Re: Motor Siezed Today

As thumper mentioned, you don't really want to do it. Just a note, if the deal sounds to good to be true it just might be. Now if it actually was a perfect setup, you could sell it later for at least 500 and then buy what you want. But there is always the issue is it as good as the salesman says it is????

Re: Motor Siezed Today

My guess is that the rpms would be very high in comparision to the much slower speed. You ran your drive without oil untill it seized, so how can a lower still be reliable if it had no oil either?
