:(ChrisCraft 177GD, HIN-CCVGD302A090, Cobra outdrive Model # 986032, Motor Model # 432APRPW5. Has 176 hrs on the meter. Boat has been sitting for 5 years. won't turn over. removed plugs (they were brand new) and squirted 2 oz of two stroke oil into each cylinder. Afraid to torque nut too hard and damage end of crank. How does one usually get a motor like this to break free? According to previous owner it ran fine up until it was not used for 5 years. What year is this thing? Also engine oil is honey colored, ie never used. The oil level was subsantially higher on the dipstick than the full line. In the neighborhood of 2 or more litres past full.
Need advice please.

Howdy,

Well, you need to determine what is frozen. the engine or the drive.

Remove the outdrive and see if the engine will turn over then.

Drain out all of the oil and see if you get water........ (oil floats on top of water......it's a density thing)

"Previous Owners" sometimes don't tell the truth so I am not sure I would believe what he/she says.

If there is water in the oil it'll come out first.

I would also remove the manifolds and risers and break them apart. You'll need to inspect and replace the riser gaskets. If they leaked after the last shutdown (5 years ago?) the engine is frozen because the gaskets allowed water back into open exhaust valves after the engine stopped turning.

If you find a couple of quarts of water in the oil pan, the block is most likely cracked. Since you'll already have the drive pulled, you'll be pulling the engine.

I hope you didn't pay a lot for the boat.....

Good luck,

Rick,
The oil is clean, not a drop of water in it. You mentioned manifolds and risers. What exactly are you referring to? Is outdrive easy to remove? What about trying to free up the motor with liquids and or force. How is a breaking bar used in that application?

Ok... So the oil is clean because you looked at the dipstick?, or you drained it all out?

It's a V-6, the exhaust manifolds are the cast iron "things" on each side of the engine. They carry the exhaust gasses
overboard.......Because they can get VERY hot, they are "jacketed" and have water running thru them to the risers, which are just a jacketed bend so water from the outside cannot slosh back into the exhaust system.

You can possibly free up the engine but you have to remove the drive because it might be frozen and it will prevent the engine from turning if it is.

You'll need to pull it anyway to inspect the u-joints, bellows, gimbal bearing (because it's been 5 years right?)

The drive is fairly easy to remove. 6 bolts, and a thru bolt at the back of the trim cyls.

From your questions, it appears that you may not have the expertise to do this. You might consider finding a shop with someone that is willing to work on an OMC Cobra.

If the lower unit is locked up wouldn't the crank be able to be moved a tiny bit back and forth due to play in the splines and u joints? my understanding is that the L/U is removed by taking off 6 nuts and the trim rams then pullin straight back. Doesn't seem like a problem to me.

Possibly. If it wasn't completely rusted in the splines (some people have had to cut the shaft right behind the coupler with a torch to just to get the drive off)

It's not a problem getting it off. You do need to have an alignment tool and the correct OEM OMC service manual to put it all back together though.

If you're up to it then go for it!

Motor now turns over after soaking for a few days in diesel fuel. The starter is not doing well. How does one remove a starter from a 4.3 litre?

At this point, you NEED to buy a manual. It will only help now and in future boat repairs.
