This motor cuts out when running for fairly long period of time. Wait 30-40 secs and it goes again. You can run it all day small amounts of time but try to go across to another dock or channel any distance and it cuts out/then comes back on after waiting. Is it getting hot? Sounds like a switch to me? Any suggestions? Thanks

There should be a circuit breaker between the batteries and the motor. That breaker may be opening and is apparently too small for extended high-speed operation. 30 - 40 cycle time sure would indicate that's the problem.

There is a "connector" on one of the positive posts on one of the batteries. Its a 24 volt system. It has two posts on it which I also have my bow mount depth finder attached to. Is this the breaker? And if so can i just take it off? Thanks, scotty

You need a electrical person next to you after you call the factory and find out what size fuse or circuit breaker to install to protect the motor. Your motor is probably trying to protect it self internally. My guess. Why is it tripping.Disconnect the motor from the battery terminal. The propellor should turn so easy that it takes 1 pinky with no effort. Check between the prop and housing for ANY fish line. If found there, remove the prop to get it all.

OK. Well I tried it and It seems to turn fine. It spins like 8-9 times around with a flick of the pinky. No fishing line or anything around it. Im thinking maybe its this breaker thing since i have my depth finder and motor both attached to it?? Thanks again.

Next time the motor stops, check to see if the locator is also dead. Proof that its the breaker (unless of course the locator is hooked directly to the battery instead of the other side of the breaker). Circuit breakers come in two varieties. One looks just like the one in your house (has a trip lever). Those however do not reset automatically. The auto-reset types have two terminals. One connects to the battery (usually via a flat metal strap. The other has a wire on it that goes to the trolling motor. Physically it looks like a square metal box about 1 inch long, 3/4 inch wide and and about 3/4 inch high. DO NOT remove the breaker -- its there to prevent your boat from burning down due to electrical overloads. Circuit breakers derate as they cycle. This means each time they cycle, some of their current carrying capacity is reduced. So instead of tripping at 40 amps, they trip at 39, then 38, then 37 until they simply can't do the job any more. Replace the breaker and make sure the existing one is the correct size for the size wire in the system. That breaker should be about 40A using 8ga. wire.

Ok. Where should i look for a new breaker? Also if what im thinking is the breaker I also have my bow depth finder running through it. Should I run that off the batter alone? Or is it ok to run through there. I know it doesnt pull much but with the two seems to me it might be enough to cause the overload? Thanks, scotty

No problem running the locator through the trolling motor breaker IF the locator has a fuse in its 12 volt input line. If it doesn't, a short in that line would melt wires before the breaker ever began to open. However its connected, your locator should have a fuse in its power input wire. You can find circuit breakers at any store that sells boating equipment, on line, Cabelas.com, Boat-US or your local boat dealer. These are not boat-specific so just tell them you want a 40A breaker for your trolling motor. They will know what you need.

Should be in $6.00 - $8.00 range. Boat dealers tend to be higher of course so perhaps $10.00 in their store.

You are supposed to use a 50 ampere auto circuit breaker. The 40 you have can't handle the load. Check it out on the Motor Guide web page.
