Re: Moving large quantity of outboards

I'm a bit puzzled with all the hoarding comments here myself.

As RF stated, these are not parts motors. He only keeps the probable runners and also only OMC at that, so there's not much "junk" involved here.

I consider what he's doing his occupation and it seems like he's making a good living buying and selling. If he needed the money I'm sure he would sell all the motors.

To me it's economics...it's been a buyer's market on boats and outboards for a few years now so I'd imagine he's not paying too much.

Holding onto them and selling them in Florida, where boating is hugely popular makes sense to me. Since he has indoor storage that's not at his house I don't get the references to hoarding and seeking help.

If these motors have not seen saltwater I'm sure folks will be interested in buying them down in Florida.

He's already sold most of the motors, so I'd say progress has been made, and he decided to keep the best ones in the lot.

Carry on RF:)

Re: Moving large quantity of outboards

Hey Mike, I luv you man. I do. But we are talking about....

1200 OB's HERE!

Not like 10 or even 20, twelve hundred! Four whole big digits worth along with a football field size pile of other stuff!

I wonder if we added up all the dealer stock in all the Lower Penninsula of Michigan if we could even come up with 1,200 outboards?

Holding onto them and selling them in Florida

This may be the most reasonable rational for keeping them and moving them ^^^^, but it doesn't appear that is the case here. Haven't heard him say that was at all his intention. If it is we'd need to hear that I suppose, eh.

If I am a betting man (I'm not) my money is on that 1,200 number of outboards being multiplied many times over once in FL, the land of plenty.

Hoarder? I dunno, probably not (based on the sale of hundreds/thousand of them). Way too many OB's (and other stuff), yup. Big time.

Why do I think 1200 might be an exaggeration. I guess because I couldnt even fathom accumulating even half that many.

Re: Moving large quantity of outboards

look into how they get shipped from the factory! how do they arrive at dealers all across north america, in perfect condition? some even sent across the pond, in 40' containers, they survive storms, railcars, and semi's! it cant be that hard to move them without damage.
with that being said, (reelfisher) should contact a tv network, explain the dilema, go with it, say what they want ya to say, and make some money, have your collection moved for free! id watch the show!!!!

Re: Moving large quantity of outboards

I got a new in the box 15 hp Mercury a few months ago and there was molded styrofoam around the outboard split in the middle so it would come apart to remove the outboard when unboxed. Don't know if that's how they ship the larger motors but either way I don't see how the OP could replicate that. (or source NOS old outboard boxes and foam. :p) but beyond that even small outboards become quite large when boxed and I can't imagine how that many outboards could be transported, even in 3+ semi loads.
OP, if you'd like, I'll come take a few dozen off your hands if you give a 98% iBoats forum member discount. :D

Re: Moving large quantity of outboards

Any ideas?

I handled a lot of odd-shaped, heavy cargo when I was gainfully employed and know that efficiently using all the cubes is a big challenge. The concept of "nesting" the motors horizontally in layers keeps banging around in the empty space between my ears. Sheet foam sounds great for protecting the cosmetics but you would still have to support each layer somehow. Will you be able to operate a forklift inside the trailers and/or the containers? If not, then forkliftable modules of motors could be placed on a flatbed trailer. I recall seeing trailers used in Hawaii for pineapple shipments that had open sides with roll-up canvas covers for the openings. They were maxed out with palletized containers that could be stacked. Good luck and how about posting some pictures of how you do it because I have confidence that you will!

I ,as a Brit, cant imagine someone having that much stuff hoarded, let alone pay for the storage in this country. .. Wonder if he`s got a carb for my 60hp merc,, i need one lol

How about using pallet racks for the main frame work and add cross supports to mount the motors on. Most of them a 4" deep so you could get two side by side in a container. Here's a quick drawing, viewed from above to give you an idea of what I'm thinking about.

Re: Moving large quantity of outboards

Using pallets you could mount 2-4 OB horizonitally on each open end of the pallet so the lower drive would sit between the heads of units on the opposite side. Two pallets wide would prevent any side to side movement during transport. Then cut lengths of 2x6-8 the same height as the tallest unit on the pallet, this would allow you to stack another layer on top. If you are concerned with front to back movement you could add 1/2 or 5/8 inch plywood to the sides to stabilize the load. Continue this way until you hit the roof this should allow for 3-4 layers depending on the size of the head units, the larger units on the first level and smaller units as you go up. Start again with the next row with maybe a sheet of foam between the two rows to prevent the tops/cowls from damaging each other. If you have access to a forklift you could assemble them in the open and stack them one pallet at a time.

Re: Moving large quantity of outboards

I've been to RFs place, I'm surprised to hear he's only got 1,000 or so motors left.
The first time there I was like a kid in a candy store, but all the candy was out of reach, not for sale.
He did fix me up with a super nice 90hp Evinrude though for a more than fair price. I got the impression
he rarely lets anyone near the warehouse, it's like Fort Knox but with boats and motors.
Picture a really big building, with motors on stands like at the dealer, but the rows of motors go on forever.
He had one room filled with nothing but 50hp Evinrudes, there had to be 300 complete very clean looking motors in there.
Outside it looked like a normal barn, not a boat or trailer in site. Like my house and garage, it was alarmed to the hilt with several big dogs running around which you need to really keep an eye on. One white pit bull didn't seem at all friendly and was running loose around the building. That dog plays friendly till you get away from your car or any place safe.

Re: Moving large quantity of outboards

I haven't a clue as to what would be the best way to pack or move all that stuff, but I also can't imagine having to move just what I've got here.

I don't think 1000 outboards or a few thousand rods and reels is all that out of the ordinary, I've probably got at least 400 in my garage here and another 15 or 20 parts motors out behind the shed, and I've got several hundred rods and reels, I just bought four more today. If something new comes out, and I like it, I buy one or two of them. If I find a deal on a good motor, I buy it because we all know when you really need one, there's none to be had for a reasonable price anywhere.
I bought two 25hp Evinrudes last weekend at a yard sale, $20 each, the old woman couldn't believe I took both. A few minutes cleaning the points, changing gear oil, and some carb cleaner and both run like new.
I didn't need them, but I run a 25hp on my tinny, so now I have two good spares. Would I sell them? Not a chance, because you know the minute their gone, mine will kick the bucket.

My biggest weakness is big garden tractors, and anything with a small engine, I've got a garage and shed full of those.
I've got a dozen or more rototillers, about 20 tractors, countless engines, and probably as many parts machines out back.

If I had more room, I'd have far more stuff. I had an ex that complained every time I bought a rod or reel, and forget about motors. She told me 15 years ago if I bought another boat she was gone, best boat decision I ever made. Now I own 9 boats and don't have to listen to anyone tell me how to spend my time or money.
Doesn't anyone here watch that show Pickers? I keep watching to see if they've knocked on my door here. I'd bet quite a few others here are in that same category. I'm sure if I had the room I'd sooner or later fill it up.

I've got a buddy that would probably make reelfishin's lot look like nothing, he's got 120 acres of woods that are filled with old cars, trucks, buses, boats, outboards, bikes, tractors, and anything you could imagine, and none of it's for sale, don't even ask, it'll get the door slammed in your face.

The big difference there though is that anything I buy that's nice, gets stored inside and taken care of, he just finds a tree and sits it there forever.

Regardless of whether you buy nice stuff or your buddy buys garbage and lets it rot....it' still 'hoarding'. Acquiring 400 of anything, "because I may need it someday" is classic hoarding behavior.

A person doesn't need to be like the people on tv that pile stuff up to their ceilings to be classified as a "Hoarder". It's no different that people(mainly women) that continue to buy clothes even though they have closets full of clothes still with tags on them.

Being a hoarder isn't a bad thing per se...but "collecting" an enormous amount of anything is a compulsion rather than a choice.

Re: Moving large quantity of outboards

I've never bought anything I didn't need, if I don't have one of something that means i need one.
Every outboard, tractor, or truck I ever bought in duplicate serves a purpose, even its just to sit there as spare parts.
Buying a complete running motor for $50 sure beats buying a new starter for $200 when the one your using goes bad. If you pass on the deal on that $50 motor, it sure as heck won't be there when you need it.

If I don't use it for parts, well then it's just another good reason to go find another boat to use it on then.
