Re: MPG on 1/2 ton ans 3/4 ton trucks

What else do you have on your truck? What gears are you running?

I hear these claims from people with Diesels all the time, but nobody I know well enough to actually ride in their truck gets this kind of milage.

I dont pay close attention, but hasnt diesel been more per gallon then gas for some time? Kind of negating the extra couple of miles per gallon.

That's a sharp looking Ranger and it looks good with the tinny. You could always use more room with just the 2 dr. Have you looked at the pre '07 Toyota Tundras? My '04 access cab pretty well loaded with 4.7 v8 and auto will give the wife 21mpg in her 30 mile trip to work using rural roads. Top speed is around 55 on her trip. I will get around 17 towing our 3500# rig. Also, there is no other truck out there that has the Toyota reliability. Good luck, the Ranger would probably work for you if you could just stretch it a bit..:p

Re: MPG on 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton trucks

I filled up in Rogers, MN today....diesel was about $.40 per gallon more than gas. My 3/4 ton Duramax / Allison will get 21 on the freeway. Last summer I got 18 to 18.5 pulling my Lund 1800 Fisherman with two motors, all our food / gear for a weeks vacation for the four of us. We took two lane all the way up to Ear Falls, Ontario...so I might have done a little better if I could have gone on the freeway.

My truck is old...built in 2001. But I would have never been this satisfied with a gasser. Just my opinion....she tows like a dream...with my mods...she has more power than a guy needs. I'm already planning to replace my rig with a new diesel pickup.

Good Luck,

Wayne

03 expedition 4X4, 5.4 H/D tow package. Tows boat well and I drive it to work.
Towing about 7600# 24' boat with hardtop, 12'6" high on trailer, (lots of wind resistance). Trailer: tortion suspension, radial tires, 4 wheel disks.
City milage: 11
Highway: At steady 60 with air on: 18
Towing: 8.5 to 9.
These are real world actual figures.

Re: MPG on 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton trucks

I drive a '99 F250 with a V-10 gasser. Everyone assumes it gets horrendous mileage. Not so bad really. I picked one with a high rear end gear of around 3.5 which results in the engine turning in some very low RPM's at highway speeds. Without a tow and running interstate speeds I get 16.5 mpg. Towing a 4000lb. load I've got 13.5 mpg. It drops off pretty good when I have to punch in the towing button and I haven't bothered measuring that, but it will tow whatever is practical to tow when I do. Most folks I know with the same truck but with the 5.4 liter engine do not get as good as I do in mpg. I attribute that to the lower engine speed. A V-10 turning up some revs does love it's fuel.

08 Tahoe, 2wd, 4.8L, 14.9 mpg averaged over 12,000 mi. Tows and rides sweet.

87 GMC 3500, 4wd, 454 ci. 9 mpg uphill, downhill and no matter what the load or if I'm towing. It always gets me there and gets me back. The mileage pretty much sucks but it will pull just about anything I want and go just about anywhere.

Re: MPG on 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton trucks

I own a 2007 Ford F-150 2WD 5.4 liter v-8 with 3.73 limited slip rear. With A few mods (costing less than 1800 bucks) this beast gets me 23 mph open road not towing. When hooked to my 7x16 cargo loaded with 5,000 lbs she will achieve average mpg of 15 crusing 65-70 mph. (Love my truck and still have a little something for the pesky Toyota Tundra trucks.:D) Most 1 ton pickups can barley get 15 while hauling similar loads.

Built FORD Tough..... Might be something to that??????

I have an F150 that doesn't come close to that. People do report getting 20MPH with F150's though, so with $1,800 in mods and the current price of fuel, the pay back should be about 11.4 years, This may not be the only benefit of the mods though.

My '01 f150 scab 5.4l 2wd averages 11 mpg around town and about 14 or so hwy. I'm sure it's much worst towing although I never bothered measuring. What's the point? No braggin rights here. It was rated that new and sucks! I wish i would have researched it before buying. My 05 Dodge 3/4 ton with 6l diesel 4wd 4dr gets about 12-14 city and 18-20 hwy. Towing a 7000 lb rv we averaged 14 this summer. Diesel was about $4.75/gal at that time:eek:. We just make sure we got plenty of fuel money when we go.

Guy's I drive two ford vehicles one is a 1998 super cab 3/4 tone with the 5.
4 v8 4 wheel drive if driven at 60 to 65 it gets 19 to 20 mpg ,imperial gal. empty when i pull my 5th wheel trailer of 28 ft, it only gets 11 to 12 mpg.

My other is a Mercury grand marque also a 1998 with the 4.6 v8 it gets 30 to 32 miles per gal.

06 Dodge 2500 Diesel quad cab 4X4
22-24 empty
14-18 loaded (14 mpg was with a 20' trailer and 15k lbs on it)
Would recommend a bigger truck for the control and braking power. I have pulled trailers and boats with smaller trucks and when the trailer start pushing you, its nice (and safe) to know the truck can push back.

Re: MPG on 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton trucks

ok, I'll jump in.
2001 F250 7.4 Diesel, long bed, and crew cab! My truck is so long it almost takes up 2 time zones.
It get about 17 MPG on the highway. With most trailers and boats, about 13 mpg, and 10-12 with a 5th wheel trailer.
BTW, if you add a chip to the truck, or reprogram it, your MPG gauge that comes with the truck will be off. I suspect this may be where some of the "really good" gas milage comes from with the diesels. However, if you calculate them by hand, it's hard to go wrong.
For several years, diesel has been more expensive than gasoline. This happened within about 6 months of me buying my truck...:)confused: so, what's up with that!?!!)

Like turning around a school bus :D

My K2500 350/auto 4.10 gears, gets 10 mpg around town, 12-13 mpg on the highway and a whopping 6-8 mpg when I am plowing in 4wd

I carry over a ton of sand in the winter and you would never know it's in the truck....... I have 1 ton springs under it.

Re: MPG on 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton trucks

what kind of Mileage are you guys getting with your 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton trucks? Im looking for opinions on guys who have one truck for DD and pulling their boat. My ford ranger gets 19-21MPG on the Highway and Im not sure its worth dealing with a small truck if I can have twice the truck at the same MPG

Here's personal observation, the new 3 valve v-8 triton motors in either a 1\2 ot 3\4 ton or 1 ton truck will deliver the same milage within 1 to 2 mpg...and probably better milage than a 4.0 auto ranger....The ranger is going away......very little new tech has gone its way for years..

Things that seperate the 1/2 ton from the heavys is basically the ride quality. If you take a look at the 1/2 ton shock system you will notice the schocks are placed almost right next to the hubs and very stiff rates. The heavy duty series have the shocks placed in a more centered traditonal location....it will ride smoother on wash board roads.

Now if your going to trailer more that 6500 lbs a heavy would be in order even though Ford does state high capacity's there is no substitute for suspension in a bad situation and the 250 and above does have a stronger frame shocks and brakes.....

Just a opinion your milage may vary.

A 5.4 ltr 150 getting 23mpg? You convert it to diesel? Sounds like a little more than a chip, exhaust, and, cold air intake to me.

Re: MPG on 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton trucks

I get up to 22.5 highway/ 19-20 average on my 07 Nissan Frontier Crew cab . Those are non-towing figures as I never tow my (leightweight )rig far enought to calculate the difference. (i.e 10-15mi max). The truck is rated for 6500# tow capacity.
If I were getting 19-21 with a full sized, I wouldn't be in a hurry to downsize unless you just wanted a smaller truck (as I did.)
