I just wanted to show off my 21' 1972 Chieftan. I paid $1600 for boat, motor, and trailer, $1800, if you count the new tires I had to put on, with another $500 worth of work on the motor, a Mercury 1150 Thunderbolt. The previous owner was a marine mechanic who had upgraded. He had replaced all of the wood, including the floor, cabinets, and transom, and the hull is perfect. It's a heck of a boat!

You got a good deal. Sounds like it's got several more good years ahead of it.

Wow! Nice! That's a lot of boat and potential fun for under $2,500. Score.

Welcome to the starmada. My 18 footer looked almost exactly the same last October. The guys around here will have you stripping that down for a full resto before snow flies. Sounds like very little to do on it if anything.

Good deal!

A couple of questions. The trailer that came with this boat does not have brakes - is that OK for this boat. The paint on this boat is in pretty good shape, maybe a little dirty under the water line, but my wife HATES the color. Could someone direct me to a good thread about painting aluminum.

A 21' aluminum hull on a trailer doesn't require brakes.

You can paint it any color Rustoleum makes :)

I "thought" some states had rules about brakes being required for tandem axle trailers. I think those states may be communist as well, but not sure on that.

Not here in MI at least.

In CT the law is any rig (boat, motor, trailer, etc) that weighs more than 3000 lbs needs brakes. I estimate mine to come pretty close to that but it passed inspection anyway.

Yah, including the trailer, I'd think you'd be very close to that 3000# mark, probably over.

Does anyone run a rig like this without brakes. How difficult would it be to put brakes on?

I pull a 21' 1965 Cheiftain behind my Exploder and I cannot even tell its there. I have no brakes on the trailer and really don't think any are necessary. No problems with stopping or handling at all.

I pull my 22 Holiday with a Chev Suburban 4x4 It has no brakes on the trailer. I guarentee if I was to replace the trailer It would have brakes. Drive safe be safe. If you have a 21 ft boat withany load and the fellow in front of you stops very quick you had better be on the outside lane or a good distance behind them IMHO

Re: My 1972 21' Starcraft Chieftan

Ive towed ALOT and alot of different trailers and weight and I wouldnt put brakes on it.Would be a waste in my opinion.I tow race cars 9 months out of the year and that boat is so light I wouldnt bother with brakes.
