We bought our house 3 years ago and thought well it needs some updating. one night I rolled back in my computer chair and something gave way and the chair kind of fell into a hole with one wheel. So I went under the house to find we had been visited by termites and what was no big deal on the top was down under.they had chewed up a floor joist and where the chair roller the old hardwood floor had dropped down. I didn't tell the wife how bad it was at the time because we couldn't afford to fix it then. just said we needed to get it treated. and we did. well time goes by and it is apparant it wasn't going to fix itself  so I start saying we need to pull up the carpeting and see what up with it and fix it. monday was D-Day. I pulled the carpet and got some suprises I wasn't expecting. I ended up removing a section in the middle of the floor 12 foot wide by 8 foot long. tounge and groove floor beams everything plus about a 2x4 section in another area. called wife at work and told her she was going to kill me but she kinda laughed it off. then got home and I thought she took it real well. I called my boss and told him I needed tuesday off he said no problem good luck.My buddy comes over and we get all floor beams back in and added some, reinforced most existing ones too. came back tuesday and finished up.
Now she says why don't we split the room to add a bedroom for our oldest son.so we lay it out I get wood etc. I suggest we get rid of paneling where the new room will be and just rock it. she says great idea she hates paneling anyway.so more demo tonight. pull paneling, crap find lathe and pllaster with blown in insulation behind that  I carefully make seam where new wall will end figure make seam where rock and paneling would meet. WRONG she wants to do the entire length of that wall in the living room with rock. more demo tomorrow night for me.
I am a mechanic and am no where near a carpenter but I have a feeling when(if) we get done with the house Tim Taylor won't have anything on me
Who would have thunk a 2" hole in the floor could cause a guy this much work.
here are some pics of progress so far
http://community.webshots.com/album/347831489JGVakd

Lot of work involved--looks good. Hope you did something to treat for the termites--both to clear up the infestation and prevent its recurrence. I think you can get chlordane at walmart.

Hey ya might as well rip out that ceiling while you're at it. Now would be a good time to update your wiring, replace the windows and remodel the kitchen and bathrooms... Be careful, a job like that can get huge in no time. Have fun!

I had a gurgle in the plumbing drain, and it cost me a new bathroom, laundryroom, kitchen, re-do the old bathroom, and drywall and flooring in the old kitchen.

I don't listen too close for gurgles anymore.

I ran nnew wiring for everything elec, phone, cable and home networking, pulled ceiling monday and going to put new up. found out it was a drop ceiling about 6" below the original. also found out that there used to be a wall that was taken out before we bought the house. all is going good but I lost my helper because he works nights and I work days. Monday and tuesday are the only days he can help and I have sat, sun, mon off. We will keep plugging away at it and should have it finished in a couple of weeks then we need to start saving to do kitchen floor and counter tops. and I think we are going to need to replace the plumbing in my bathroom and out to where the new and old plumbing meet. Adventures in home ownership. I have added pictures as we go. The best part is we are having fun doing the work and i'm learning alot as we go. only problem is these 18 hour days are starting to catch up with me. but thats ok too come friday at 5 i'm on vacation for 10 days and we are going camping sat sun and mon.
http://community.webshots.com/album/347831489JGVakd

all is moving along but at a real slow pace right now. I went and got new carpet and padding today and will be putting it in tomorrow after work. got remenent rolls of Shaw carpet 1-10x12 and 1-12x20 with padding for $250. still need to get trim but we can work on that as we get time we need to get our house back livable before my wife skins me.
http://community.webshots.com/album/347831489JGVakd

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. This past Oct. found a leak under the down stairs bath vanity. No big deal just replace the drain pipes. Well leak was worse then I tought it was. So to make a long story short I finished the bathroom in May.
