That "Chinese food" thread got me to thinking about my time in the far east and the things I ate over there (mostly because I was blinded by liquor). Dog, monkey, kimchi, and the nastiest delicacy known to man...balute.

Balute is a aborted baby duck still in the egg that is fermented. It is a Filipino delicacy. It is the smelliest, grossest thing you can imagine. The Balute man would come through screaming "Baaaaaaaaa-luuuuuuuute" and drunken GI's would stagger to him and suck down the duck egg innards to prove their "manhood".

What is the nastiest thing you have ever eaten? ;)

Saw a coon dog eat another dogs feces.

Didn't really appreciate that dog tryin to lick my face. :p

That made me like cats.

Nastiest thing I ever ate was probably various insects that I inhaled while riding my dirt bike. Thing is, they really didn't taste that bad. ;)

Did you actually eat one? No matter how "wasted" I was while enjoying the hospitality of Olongopo, I could never bring myself to gag a balute down.

Toward the end of my Basic Training cycle at Ft. Bliss Texas, the Army was trying to recruit volunteers for Ranger training. While he was talking to us, this Ranger Sgt was holding and petting a white rabbit. He was telling us that during survival training, a Ranger candidate would learn to eat just about anything. In the blink of an eye that sgt was eating the rabbit's bloody liver.
There were no volunteers that day.

If you have never had 'ramps', a wild leek (Allium tricocum), you don't know what nasty food is. They smell like  rotten onions & garlic.

Tried it, wasnt that bad, has the same consistancy as a hard boiled egg that is intirerly(sp) yoke...only difference is the smell and the crunch of the legs. Least you new it was chicken...Rode a rabbit bus to Manila...the bus would stop at nearly every crossroads in the country-side..venders would climb on and sell fried pork rines in a plactic bag with hot gravy poured on top...Ummmmmmmmmm! :) ....ah the days..a man was King for a week with 300$...

PS- Love kimshi...wish I new how to do it....then I could just kiss my wife.... :D

Had some very nasty Japanese lunchmeat once in Yokahama. I don't know if it was suppose to taste like that or if they were just messin' with the "round-eye". :( :(

Funny Backlash, you try to explain that place to people, and you just can't do it. It's a place that has to be experienced first hand. Many misspent hours there that mom and the rest of the female population wouldn't approve of  :D

Semper Fi!

My mom was a nature lover and made sure all of us kids experienced as much nature as possible, even when it came to food. We were constantly subjected to new 'finds' in the woods and from the water.

I loved all the milk weed, mustard weed, dandelion greens, berries, and other fresh fruit, etc. but she made a mistake with the mushrooms once and nearly killed us all.

Worse yet she made us eat this root from the bottom of a water lilly
the Indians used it for potatoes. Its black and smells worse than it looks when cooking. When we all tried it, it was like a spitting contest at the kitchen table, we immediately spit it out on our plate, but so did she.

I don’t care what it is…if it doesn’t move fast enough, I’ll try to eat it. :)

That said, there is an Asian fruit that is about the size of a watermelon and looks like a porcupine on steroids. I forget the name of it but when cracked open it has a deep, pungent smell of stagnant, raw sewage. It is banned from some public places in Calif. It is safe around me…until opened…then I’m gone! Never did taste it.

Re: Nastiest food known to man

At a family reunion a few years ago all the guests were met with a pan full of deep fried dellicacies as they walked in the entrance. After trying one you were told what they were. Yum! Lamb Fries! The sheep version of Mountain Oysters. I would eat them again. :D
But my most memorable oddball dish was marinated, barbequed snake. I think it was a gopher snake, but not sure. Tasted like barbequed chicken.
Bassy :D
