Re: Nastiest food known to man

Were the participants allowed to get rip-roaring, staggering, slurring their words drunk before eating that? It's the only way I could do it :D

I saw that fear factor and had serious gag reflex, they didn't call it that but it was. I remember my years in Subic Bay well, nothing like Gordon avenue for a night. Our aircraft would always have radar trouble whenever we were close to the PI.
Here is a website for you old salts that have been there and want to stroll down memory lane http://www.subicbaypi.com/ It even has a picture section of all the honeycos.

Mother's meatloaf, how is that going to preserve him, unless it's made of fermaldahyde ;)

That is a cool site GT, brings back a lot of memories. Where else in the world can you go out with a $20 spot and be KING OF THE WORLD for an evening :D

I completely forgot about being a hunter's daughter. Oh my! We got to try all sorts of things. My Dad didn't waste much. All sorts of livers, tongues, hearts. My favorite, that all five of us kids fought over, was the duck heart. I guess it was the little size of it. Whatever it was as we got older we fought over it less. I wonder why... :D

GaugeGuy..you and I have been to same I love you no s... country..Sin city Olonopo ah yes..And the kim chi from Korea..Roasted lizzard over hot coals or the smell of monkey hair as it is roasted over coals..
And lets not forget the filet of dog or cat as it is dried on ones roof..What is distaste to some is a delicacy to others. It amazing how far five bucks would go in the 70s..San miguel for $.10..a room and some toys for the evening and still have money left over..remember the phrase "you no butterfly on me or else.

I was a "butterfly" on many a LBFM. Never seen women that could handle knives as well as those filipinas. As much as I enjoyed the PI, I really loved Korea. Bulgogi and rice, those mini egg rolls, the scenery, and once you got far enough away from the barrios around the bases, the people were actually very nice. I can't remember the beer I drank in Korea (it'll come to me), but I do remember pints of Captain Q rum...hangover city man :D

I was over there in the mid 80's, inflation had raised the price of San Miguel to .20 a bottle and a room with entertainment and a live chicken for breakfast  was about $7. If I saved all the money I blew over there I may be able to have filled my gas tank for about 6 weeks :D

I spend a few days in Poland where no food is consumed unless it is cooked to absolute death and beyond.Their food is as bland as it is cooked unless of course you drink Borsht which looks, tastes and smells like diluted red paint. You will need a lot of vodka to forget about this goop. And then there is this black soup made with pigs blood....
I guess you have to be polish to apreciate it.

.....how much is that puppy in the window?

*************************
Walked into work today with the balooot on my mind.
As I am passing a friend of mine from the Phillipines, I say hi, then say Baloooot as I'm walking away. A few second later I look back at her. She is looking at me. When we make eye contact, her eyes light up and she starts to grin real wide. "What did you say?"

Balooot, why? have you heard of it?"
She now starts laughing, and says I'm pulling her leg. "oh, I miss that soooo much. It is so good."

Well after talking about this "stuff" for a while, she wants me to get some eggs from the pheasant farm near me. She whipped out a $20 on the spot.
"and make sure they are only 2 weeks old, so they are not crunchy."

SHe said she will make them and "share with me". :)

gonfishn, my cousin, Michael Murphy from Tampa, spent two tours "in country" as a corpsman with the 1st and 3rd Marines, approx. '66-'69. He came home pretty well decorated and with 2 purple hearts.
He is about 5 years older then me and was a real hero in a young boys eyes.

Never lost a shot record, our doc was real tight with us. Back then I would have fought any soldier, sailor or airman on a drop of a dime. Anyone messed with our doc, they had a whole bunch of PO'd Marines on them in a hurry. You said you never had to fight, probably didn't have to buy too many drinks either ;)

Skinnywater..I traveled in the same steps as your cousin but later..Those years were the most turbulent years in that unpopular time..I have the utmost respect for those who were there then..Next time you see him tell him a doc from the 1st Mar Div said hi..

GaugeGuy..the stories that could be told here..many hear of the sad times but there were many good times to. I saw five different counties and saw the beauty where most people can only read about..The food..Well you were being disrespectful if you turned down your hosts and the food they served..The sacrifices one must do while in the service to include some unsavory delicacy's that passed along my taste buds..

Re: Nastiest food known to man

I hear ya gonfishin, I know you marines didn't much care for the fliers (or tube rats as we were called) but in the end it was all in good fun. I flew to many countries and some really out of the way places and looking back only try to remember the good times. Loved all the foods of the world.
And how the filipinas knew more about our operations than we did is beyond me, I held a top secret clearance and I would find out more from them than the operations center. Oh yea this is about food, well Via's tacos were the best after a San Magoo hangover. Ahhhh rusty bottle caps.
