Re: Need an opinion on this boat for sale

Looking at the pictures, I bet it has sat uncovered for 5 years and the dealer put the cover on it, then took the pictures, the cover looks pretty new. Why else would there be dead leaves & pine needles showing in the corner of one of the pictures? Unless it's a rodent's nest. Like others have said, I think you can do better, don't rush into it.

Dealer has it and its not worth his time to fix it up????????

Dealer has access to cheap parts and slow days he could have work for his staff and still not worth his time.

Pass on it.

Re: Need an opinion on this boat for sale

... You all may think that my offer would be too high but boat prices seem much higher here in my part of Canada. I found a few identical boats in the States and one was priced at $4600 USD all clean with trailer ready to go.

Anyways, I have tons of hours in it and don't mind one bit the amount of work it takes as it's all worth it when you see the smile on the kids face tubing, fishing and cruising. I have a shop big enough (36'X40') with a 2 post hoist and all the tools need to rebuild the engine if it's rebuildable. It all boils down to price, rot and a trailer. We'll see how it turns out.

Thanks!

Sid

Now for the lost art of bargaining...

The definition of a Fair Exchange is when both the Buyer and the seller are Equally Unhappy.
The Buyer thinks he paid a little too much, and the Seller thinks he should have gotten a little more!

Rule #1. He who talks the most looses! :)

If the seller keeps explaining every detail about the item, He appears desperate to sell and is at the mercy of the buyer.
The same principal applies to the Buyer.

Ask the seller "NO" questions.
The more questions he keeps answering "NO" to, the less the boat becomes worth in his mind.
Ask if the Motor has been run recently, "NO"
Do not ask if it cranks, The answer may be "Yes, but it didn't have any gas." (That adds Value in his mind.)

You do not know how much he really wants, He may just want to get rid of it and any money is just frosting.
Do not let him know how much you are willing to pay... Wear your Poker Face.

Make your offer and then keep your mouth shut. DO NOT Explain yourself.
The silence is deafening. He will want to reply quickly without thinking too much, just to break the silence.
After the counter offer, Keep your mouth shut for at least a 10 count.
Use the silence to your advantage; He may counter his own counter offer.

Start low, Way too low, You can go up, but you can't go back down.
If you start at $500 and he say's OK... You offered too much.

Its sounds like this....

You... $500
Silence.
Him... I have $5000 in it and really need to get that back.
Silence.
Him... Ok, I could come down to $4000 but that?s about it.
Silence. He just went from 5000 to 4000 and you have done nothing!
You... $750 (Only come up a little at the second offer.)
Silence.
Him... Man your killing me, can't you come up to something reasonable like maybe $3000?
Silence. More silence.
You... would you consider $1500. (Come up a lot at this point)
Silence.
Him... $1500 is way less than I was hoping for.
Silence.
Him... How about $1700, and I'll throw in a spare gas can?
Silence.
You... You have a Deal!

You might have been willing to go with the $3000 offer, but don't let him know it.
Notice that he has nothing to complain about; he won in his mind, because he is the one that came up with the $1700 number.
And, You have nothing to complain about because you are the one that actually accepted the offer.

The Golden Rule of Money ... He, Who Has the Money, Makes the Rules.

Never forget that, as the buyer, you hold the money, and are the one that is in control of the sale.
You are the one that will make the decision to buy, or not buy, and how much will be exchanged.

The seller's only decision is to take the offer or keep the property. NEVER forget this point.

A good salesman knows he is in the position of weakness, but he also knows that most buyers do not understand that they hold the high ground, and keep sticking their heads up.
Keep your head down, and your mouth shut!
And make sure the Admiral know the battle plan!
Remember this the next time you go to buy a car!

Haggling is a lot art in today?s society, but a lot of fun to do, or even watch, when done well.
Watch PAWN STARS to see it done well. You will occasionally see a seller that knows the game.
Mostly you will see sellers getting their heads shot off!

Re: Need an opinion on this boat for sale

Hey all! Please check out this boat advertised locally and let me know what you think.

http://kingston.kijiji.ca/c-cars-ve...r-Bowrider-18-Project-Boat-W0QQAdIdZ354999346

I just talked to the seller and he said it has an alpha 1 gen 2 out drive. He just took it in on trade and doesn't know much more than what the ad says. He's not sure on the engine but thinks it turns over. If you all think it's worth looking at, I plan on taking some tools and doing a compression check. Any thing I should be looking out for with this model? Thanks for the help.

Sid

Seems like a lot for a boat where you don't even know if it runs, or floats.. With how dingy it looks i'm willing to bet the floor and transom are rotting..

if you buy it be sure to go through it with an eye towards rot, personally i think 750 to 1000 dollars would be more in line.

Re: Need an opinion on this boat for sale

Just got off the phone with the seller. He updated the ad. He told me that it has antifreeze in it. I'm going to look at it tomorrow. He said the trailer is $650 from his buddy but said that's too much and to look elsewhere. We'll see. Thanks for all the advise so far. I will take it all with me when I go to look at it.

Cheers!

Re: Need an opinion on this boat for sale

Good luck Sid. I know the market here in Ontario and our friends to the south can't fathom what we have to pay for a boat. A 14' tinney with a motor is $1500 minimum, unless you come across someone who hasn't a clue. This can be a good looking boat when cleaned up. The antifreeze is a good thing but the leaves and pine needles are a red flag, meaning it's been left uncovered or not stored very well. Big thing is to check the transom and stringers for ANY rot. As the motor hasn't been run for 5 years, both the dealer and you have to assume it's worthless, even it it's not. My gut says you will be bringing it home, on the trailer, and your wallet will be about $1800 lighter.
BTW, I sold my EZ Loader trailer, similiar to that one for $600 in 2 days on Kijiji, so the price isn't to far out of line.

Re: Need an opinion on this boat for sale

Well I went a looked at the boat on the weekend. It's dirty! Engine is free with lots of oil in the cylinders. Engine oil looks clean. No signs of the oil being changed before it was put up for sale. The floor has a soft spot around the ski locker beside the drivers seat. Bellows are shot. It has anti fouling paint on the bottom and is starting to flake off. There is no key with it to start it. It does need work and I expected that to a certain point. He said it has no spark and I know why.

Anybody familiar on the construction of the floor, stringers and such? Would like to know so I can get an idea of the work involved to repair it. That way I can be more sure of the offer I made.

Here's a link to my photobucket album with some pictures.

It sounds like you put in an offer? Was it contingent on anything, or simply an offer to out right purchase it? I can't really put a dollar value on a boat like that, no trailer, potentially and probably trashed engine and drive, rotted interior, floor rot... I love project boats, and poke around on them all the time. This boat seems to be quite rough. I do hope for the best though. Keep us updated if he takes your offer.

Re: Need an opinion on this boat for sale

Some people, such as the OP, don't come to iboats for advice on buying a boat; they come here to fish for that one person who might agree with some small part of their flawed premise. This then sends them into the frenzy that was only one minor endorsement away as they came back to the thread, ducking and dodging anyone that refuted the flawed premise with which they came.

There's hope. Having been "that guy" twice--once with a nice cheap Glasspar 3G that only needed a motor and stringers and once when I wanted someone to tell me that you didn't need to winterize an I/O engine--I can tell you that I listen a lot better now than I used to.

I had a long post typed in about basically offering what the trailer would be worth, then remembered there was no trailer.

Geesh! You sure know how to take the "FU" out of FUN! Since I'm in such a frenzy, a reply to your mess of words is not warranted......

So, ducking away from that response, I offered him $1300 with the trailer. He thought I was low as I expected he would. I explained what I found which he probably already knew which is why he's trying to get rid of it to some sucker for too much money. This boat in running condition with no issues goes for over $10000 around here. I found one in IL for $4600. I understand that I would be crazy to buy this one, fix it up when I could buy one ready to go for around $5000 but boat prices around here are much higher that down in the US.

I appreciate the opinions good and bad. That's why I asked the original question. The seller took my number saying he would think about it and get back to me. Haven't heard anything yet which my be a good thing.

Re: Need an opinion on this boat for sale

So, why did you ask here if the advice is not worth more than what you know?

This is the issue at hand: Asking... then justifying that, based on what you know, there is a fair deal to be had on a boat that you have evaluated is worth having at a given price --- a price which, TADA, you have determined to be right/fair.

The point is that this board could be riddled with recommendations to run at any cost -- simply run.

Few run. Most create arguments that beg the question or lack objectivity and/or ignore opinions (which is why you're here).

We can discuss boat facts all day. That's the easy/fun part. The harsh part is discussing the major flaws that many low-end boat buyers are riddled with. From my experience, being harsh and blunt works.

Being all nicey nice doesn't work. Not in these threads. Some buyers need to be slapped upside the head with a large, cold, wet fish -- sometimes more than once.
