1970's Glastron V163 Bayflite. Heres the story, transom was rotten, began to repair the transom and decided to go ahead and replace the stringers. All work is complete. Yesterday we put the cap back on the boat. Tight fit but it went back on. I now have one section on the starboard side where the gunwale is bowed in and a section on the port side that has 4 small bows inward. The bow on the starboard side was much bigger than the pic below. I managed to reduce the size by adding a furring strip to the wood that runs around the top of the hole, for the cap to screw into. My question is how to get these other bows out of the gunwale. Help me out guys I need to finish this boat this week. Plans for the lake this weekend coming. (4th)

I understand the gap in the bow. The new transom is just a bit wider than the original and that distance has caused this gap. The new transom is 1.5 inches wide. Any and all help is welcomed. Thanks in advance for your input.

Wow....

Not good. Your boat hull is now too big for your cap. Tight fit? I'm surprised you got it on at all.

I'd say you have some major rework to get the hull back to size. You may have to cut the splashwell down to get a proper fit at the bow. That would allow the cap to slide back properly.

Your hull top's circumference should be just slightly smaller than the cap's. Obviously, it's much larger. Also, the furring strip shouldn't be on the outside fo the hull. It's making it larger there as well. I'd put the furring on the inside of the hull. It will still allow screws or rivets to hold well, just through both panels of glass. You have it backwards being on the outside of the hull. Changing that might just be enough to get things close.

Yeah.. wow! was the side if the hull like that before the cap? It looks like the whole cap needs to slide back.. Can you grind or cut the top of the transom to allow more movement..

Oops would just cut the cap in two, and glass it back together:D

You know I've been reading Oops' thread for a long time and I agree that would be his solution. We even considered doing just that.

UPDATE

The cap is on and all of the deformities are gone. Well how did we do it? We ground the back of the splashwell to allow the cap to slide back and braced the inside of the cap to the proper height. then we used a small crow's foot to slide under the lip of the cap and the outside of the hull. and walked it from bow to stern. We came out with the sides looking just as good as before we began. I will post some pics in a little while. Looks like we averted a lot of work and saved the project. :)

For starters I would get that cap off and let the sides relax. Leaving those corregations cannot be good.

Also some better standoff pictures might help. Yours are too close up to get an overall picture. (IMHO)

Sounds like you got the handle on it. When I looked at the photos, it seems BAD, but after looking at the front, it did appear to me the cap was too far forward. So is the front bow looking like it meets the hull properly? Looks like you made a great save, and when you put all the screws back in, you should be sitting good.

Looking forward to the photos.

That's an issue that I'll be addressing in pictures when I get to that point again. I had the cap off last summer, got the old transom out but the project stalled and winter came. Put the cap back on and it's definitely a 2 man job to avoid tons of frustration ( sides of the hull bowing out ). Not sure if your boat is the same, but the hull sides on my glastron are surprisingly thin.

Re: Need help getting cap back on

I just cant believe that the glass can be so thin like that for the hull to ripple like that. I have an older boat that im working on and if my side were to do that it would have to be in one of those car crushers. The sides of my hull are about 1/4 of an inch thick. I did not know that you could get by with a thinner hull like that, but i bet the boat is a lot lighter than if it had a really thick hull. My first thought before i saw you got it under control was also to cut the cap and reglass. It made me laugh when it was said that was the ooops way out. Anyways good stuff and id like to see the pics with the cap on again. Good job man good luck getting it back together in time.

Re: Need help getting cap back on

I had a similar problem with my Glastron restore. I finally cut off the back of the splash well and just glassed it to the transom that way. I still have a 1" or so gap at my bow that I just filled with 4200. (I should have cut off a little bit more but..oh well).

I have given up on the "make perfect" idea on my restore and I have gone to "make usable". I should be on the water by the weekend too (as long as I don't have any problems with registering the trailer).

Good luck.

V178 Starflite. I'm surprised you are running an 125hp motor on that thing, mine is max rated @ 125hp.

Had a 125 Johnson on it when I got it. Its rated for a 115.A buddy looked into the weight of my motor and came up with a figure of about 300 lbs. Prior to the rebuild the boat seemed to handle the motor well. Funny how two different models got the same color scheme.
