Well I finally got my boat up to the lake. I installed some whips on the dock to hold the boat off and they seem to work very well up to this point... but I still need some protection from the dock when docking.. :D As usual I come here to get ideas and input as I value all your opinions and suggestions.. I could go with the regular pvc edging sold at most marine stores including here, or use the old tires covered with fabric, I prefer the old tires as they seem to give more area and better impact absorbing qualities. my only concern is I think they would also make a great place for snakes to live.(we have water mocasins and copper heads in this area). Anyway, I'm just throwing the subject out there and see what we come up with..Thanks Flash

tires and snakes, that the tire, with a sawzall cut the tire in half , you have 2 half circled fenders, and no where for the snakes. using a bias ply tire will be better than a steel belt tire.

I don't want to seem unimaginative here, but why not just string a few regular inflatable fenders along your dock?
Or is there a law in Tennessee that forces you to use old tires for fenders? ;) :D

wildlife, what does "rotmalo" mean? well anyway, I know I can hang fenders, put in rub rail and do tires, I'm just brain storming to see what the rest of of the world can come up with. maybe I could take 4" pvc pipe and fill it with jello and have a good fender....I don;t know.........Brians, thanks for the fenderboard, I have one for getting thru the locks,,,,, I'm looking for a permanent fix.. and that's relative . anyway Paul, that will work and it's provin. I'm looking for something NEW,, maybe I can hang hemp from the dock and get a good cushion IMHO

That was just to show the Fenders they used, I am not aware of any Link to it, since it's a Magazine.

Um, that link takes me to a West Marine product (Fender Board Guards), not a project article. Can you update the link?

yea we gotta do something with all those old tires..you just don't have a tennessee dock unless ya got some tires nailed to it... :D I think I may try that half a tire idea..and StudlyM, if you catch and kill it, I'll be happy to try eating it. I tried the turtles last year and they ain't bad.. :D

I use these. Inflatable with a car-tire valve at both ends. Can be cut to whichever length needed. Can be fastened with screws or plastic fastening strips. Even bends around corners. Made by link

Stevens, those fenders look pretty cool, I wonder if they are available in the states? I went to the website but couldn't find them. (not that that means anything, I have trouble navigating my boat let alone a computer.) :D

I highly doubt these are available in the US yet - it seems like a tiny company. I bet they'd like some exports or an agent!

Something that won't cost you any money...
Many fire departments have old fire hose that is no longer serviceable and needs to be thrown away. If you use roofing nails and put it to the edge of your dock in "waves" so that the crests stick out a few inches, it provides quite a bit of padding. Just go to your local firehouse a ask for it. If possible, give them a donation because most departments are volunteer and rediculously underfunded.

Aj, that is a good idea. My dock is steel so it may be a bit difficult fastnening the hose but not impossible..
steven, I may give you folks a call and see if they need an agent in the US. I'm not a salesman by profession but if the product is good and the price is right it will sell itself..I bet I could market it right here on Iboats.....

SNAKES!!! In the WATER!!! Nesting on my dock!!! No way you'd find me "enjoying" the water where this goes on. I realize I'm deeply sheltered and horribly out of touch with what it means to enjoy the outdoors in most of the world but there's no way, just now way I'd even consider dealing with that. I'd sooner worry about lions "nesting" on my dock - and you think I'm kidding...

I had to take a minute to check under the computer desk. Nope - no venomous snakes but I'll be sure to check every few minutes now that you have me thinking about this.

There are some downsides to living in Minnesota - but the annual deep freeze that makes it impossible for these kind of creepie-crawlies to survive isn't one of them.

To each his own eh?

I guess it depends on what you are used to Terry. around hear, you just kinda learn to look out for the snakes..I do cringe sometimes when I see my neighbor's 2 young kids swimming around their floating dock. thats another place the snakes like, hanging out on top of the floats..course in the winter i don't see them around. I guess the'r hibernating. you don't have any snakes up there? I bet you do and just don't know it. I seen rattle snakes in cleveland ohio..
