Gang, this is a serious request. As you can tell, I've decided to attempt this by myself and would really appreciate if someone could be on stanby this weekend to walk me through in case I hit a snag during the gimbal & bellows replacement.

The transom kit should be here hopefully Friday and I plan on starting right away as soon as I get in from work. Would guess that Saturday morning should be the reassembly time so I'd appreciate it if someone would offer their time.

Yes, I'll have the laptop with me with the videos ready to go, also have Manual #14 available but its a tad vague for the first timer.

Thanks in advance,
Jamie

Bt Doctur, not sure I understand. That link took me to another website that doesn't have many replies to the threads.
Thanks for your trouble,
Jamie

Turbo, I bought the expander tool. My concern is that I'm good at tearing things apart..... its just that reassembling part that gets me :(

patience is key on this, it actually wasnt bad at all, from what ive seen the water line is the hardest part, and i dont have one on mine so i didnt have to deal with it. i didnt use an expander, i did in all by hand and it was fairly easy, i did make sure i had alot of 1/4" extensions and swivels, also a bendy/flex screwdriver to make getting to all the hose clamps very easy

Got it Ed. Many thanks and I hope I don't have to call you but just in case :)

Btw, yes I have the flexible shaft for the screwdriver/nut driver. Saw where this will help.

No Title

Started at 6am this morning and by 8am I'm done... finished and giving up. Got the drive removed and gimbal bearing out (pretty easy). There was water in the Ujoint bellow so I dinked around tried to remove the bell housing and figure out what do next. In doing so, ended up snapping the 90 degree plastic oil nipple that connects to the gimbal housing and runs from the oil reservoir to the outdrive. That was the final straw. Having watched many videos and read instructions and posts till almost sick, I knew this project was too much for me but did it anyhow.

Now to find a local mechanic who is willing to take on the project and do the work with my parts. Being impatient, I just got off the phone with a local marina and requested a quote.... pending. Good news is that I can sell most all my stuff and recoup the money but how will they like it when I bring a partially disassembled boat to them?

Lesson for the day (nugget to put in my pocket) is listen to your gut dumb-a** and heed that feeling. Simple gimbal bearing change would be alright but those bellows are not for me.

Up next on ebay will be a slightly used alignment bar, bearing puller, and bellows expander.
Rant over :)

If they've been in business any decent length of time you should not be the first one (or first several) to try a repair yourself, have problems and bring the boat in for them to complete the work.
When you requested the quote didn't you mention the current state of the repair?

Doubledog,

I feel for you. I think you should lighten up on self, though. Even mechanics who do this for a living have regular occasion to cuss out unexpected breakage of ancillary parts and pieces.Especially true on sterndrives where rubber and plastic parts get age hardened quickly (especially when after market parts were used) and are really tough to get a wrench on unless you know just which tool to grab. The design is made for frustrating the new mechanic. Busting a part is just part and parcel.

It is really nice to know the ins and outs of your boat by doing your own work. I just hate to see you quit on it. I like your work space, BTW. Nice drive stand!

Ayuh,..... Couldn't agree more,.... take a break,.... read, 'n follow the factory manual, Exactly, 'n go finish up what ya started,....

Pullin' the bellhousin', 'n doin' bellows is always been known as a knuckle buster job,....
Tommays used to have a picture of all the Necessary Tools to do the deed, which included a box of Bandaids,....

Thanks Gents. I'm at peace with the decision and never really lost my cool (thank goodness) even went back out and stared at it for a few minutes trying to convince myself. Like a poster stated above, it was good to get in there and see the working parts of it.

An update: The marina returned my call and said they would do the work with my parts for $85 the hour/estimated 5 hours with doing the shift cable (which came in my kit as well).

2nd update: A buddy whom I have bought a rig from before, has a buddy who works at the above marina said he will be happy to do the work on the side w/my parts but it will be at least two weeks before he can get around to it. This is the route I'm going but he wants me to get the broken part in before dropping it off.

Lastly, I noticed one of my trim senders has stripped wire. Is this a problem or can I coat with liquid tape and call it day? Prefer to order from a one stop shop.

Oh, many thanks-!

Ayuh,.... If you think the trim gauge, or trim/ tilt stop is Necessary, change 'em both,.....

I don't, 'n just cut the wires off, by-passin' it inside the hull,...

Ayuh,..... One is the trim sender, for the trim gauge,.... the other the trim limit, which stops it's rise at the trim's limit,...
After that, ya use tilt to over-ride that switch,...
