What is the gas/oil ratio for a 1959 Johnson Javelin 2 stroke? The woman I bought it from said it was 24:1 which seems like an awful lot of oil but I know the older models weren't exactly environmentally friendly. Thanks

24:1 is the correct mix, Kathy. Many of the older outboards use 16:1 and even 8:1 in some early air cooled models.

Wonder if the 24:1 would work for my Evinrude Big Twin 35?

What year EWS?

Kathy, what is the model number of your motor. They did not make a Javelin in '59, just want to determine the exact year for you.

Like HighTrim says, the Javelin was only made in '56 and '57. 59, was the "Super Seahorse" Reguardless though, 24:1 is correct. Fix that classic up, and you'll have a good reliable motor ;)

I ask specifics now due to an encounter where a poster actually had a 70s Javelin, thought it was a 50s, and confused everyone involved, lol

Thanks for asking...the woman I purchased it from said it was a '59, then she paused and said that maybe it was a '56, she couldn't remember. It is a Javelin so then it's definitely a '56resized_DSCN3819.JPGresized_DSCN3814.JPG

That is in fact a '56

It was originally designed to run on 6 volts, has it been converted to 12v?

Re: Need to know gas oil ratio for vintage motor

When the seller demonstrated it starting for me, she had it hooked up to a 12 volt car battery so I assume it's converted? Hasn't exploded, caught fire or done whatever having the wrong battery might make it do, yet!
Also, if you look at that one picture of the front of it, there's been some obvious "tinkering" done. The added plate has, from left to right: toggle switch for a fuel pump that was added to the gas tank (I don't use that tank, I use an old one with a bulb), the start button, then a in/out switch that has to be pushed in before trying to start it. It's not the choke, I guess it's just an on/off switch but I would have thought that pulling it out would be "on" but that's not how it's wired. I want to hook it up to a control box and get rid of all that stuff on the plate and also need to be able to have that area free so I can hook up the cable steering. My former neighbor is a "boat guru" and he's agreed to come and take a look at it for me, hopefully this weekend if it isn't still a miserable 105 degrees out!
