Re: Neighbor asked to borrow my Chaparral

I'm like most, and wouldn't lend hardly anything I value to someone I barely
know.

Then again, I'm one of those people that doesn't lock his door at night or
when he leaves the house either. Matter of fact, I'm not sure where my
house key is.

really? what did you say your address was? LOL J/K

You should have told him you had family coming into town and asked to borrow his restaurant for a night so you could impress them.

He probably would have taken you up on that offer.

Re: Neighbor asked to borrow my Chaparral

Most of us only find that good close friend a rare event. We all have friends but friends we would trust our boat to would only be the very close friend. That rare breed of friendship that only a few of us might have. let me explain it this way......

A good friend will bail you out of jail, no questions asked.

But a really good friend, well he would be the one who bails you out of jail sayin...."damn that was fun lets do it again"

He's the one that might get to borrow my boat.

I would only loan my boat to my Dad. He was a boater for years and has a lot of experience... and if he breaks it, he's got the $$$ to fix it.

Only 3 people I would let borrow my boat. My uncle hes been boating since before I was born, my dad he has also been boating since befroe I was born, and my brother who has been boating longer than I have and has already trashed a prop and fixed it. All 3 know that if they brake it they buy it.

Re: Neighbor asked to borrow my Chaparral

I offered mine up to my neighbor - whom I trust & respect - for the day, but he declined. I've also offered it up to friends & family, whom I also trust, because I know they are more experienced (and probably more responsible) than myself, and I know if they break it they can and will fix it. I don't have much of an emotional attachment to my stuff.

Quick thinking about saying it was already for winter etc..A great excuse and now he can take your no answer and not lose honor by a direct rejection...You may lay off of his chinese food for a while though just in case you pissed him off and he didnt act like it...

Re: Neighbor asked to borrow my Chaparral

My typical response to those requests. I have a boat, ATV and snowmobiles[not in this case cuz u didnt know the guy] is... I consider you a good friend and I am not going to screw that up by lending you my ... [ insert toy description here] :D

That's a great answer and really truthfull at the same time. I'm going to use it next time this happens.

I only have one friend I'd let borrow a boat and even then he'd have to NEED IT. And he knows better than to even ask. He wants to go out all he has to do is ask and I'll take him, and he knows that too.

Re: Neighbor asked to borrow my Chaparral

Instead of just telling him no and maybe saying something about liability all I could think to tell him was that the boat was already winterized and decommissioned for the year.

I hope his uncle isn't coming back in the spring,,, after the boat has been readied for the summer... Just sayin'

My luck if that happened, the guy would come back and say his uncle was really looking forward to the boat trip and postponed his trip until my boat was water ready, and that he wanted to know when my boat would be ready so his uncle could plan his spring/summer trip...:D

Re: Neighbor asked to borrow my Chaparral

Ive always had a perfect answer on that kind of questions:
Sorry, insurance only valid with me at the helm!
In most insurance companies, at least the serious ones, 'skipper' has to be stated.
One thing is damage on own boat, that might be repaired. But any 3d party claim?????

Re: Neighbor asked to borrow my Chaparral

Only one person comes to mind that I would lend my boat to. She is one of my best friends. She wouldn't ask tho, her boat is newer and in alot better shape than mine.

My boat is my only toy. Anybody(besides her) asking to borrow it may as well be asking to borrow a kidney. They're gonna get the same response.

Hey PaulTJohnson, nice avatar...looks familiar. :D:D:D

Re: Neighbor asked to borrow my Chaparral

I have 3 brothers and all but 1 has a boat. The one who doesn't have a boat has recently started asking me if he could borrow my boat. He has been on a boat before but has no knowlegde of how things work or how to drive one. This summer was the worst b/c I bought a much bigger nicer boat than what I had last summer. I dont trust him let alone anyone else to take my boat without me. Now if he or anyone else wants to drive it while I'm on it, I have no problem with letting them. Just not without me keeping an eye on things.

Re: Neighbor asked to borrow my Chaparral

No one will ever use my boat unless I'm on it with them. I used to think I could lend it to my best friend but after he drug bottom in his own boat with the lake low I just don't know. (he know's it's shallow there even with the lake full). He's been driving boats since he was literally in diapers too. Sometimes he just has his head stuffed up his arse. I know he'd fix anything he messed up but it's the down time that is the ultimate inconvenience. We are going to play musical props though to see which rig operates best with which prop. We both agree that my 200hp on my 19' bass boat would do better with his 24p Raker and my big 25p would do better on his 17.5' Stratos with a 150 since he turns the timing way up and is all about speed anyway.

Re: Neighbor asked to borrow my Chaparral

There's a simple, effective way to deal with these types of requests. The technique is effective, and has been passed down through generations. It's incredibly complex for the brain to generate the response, and often with any amount of consistency or lack of disclaimers, excuses, tales and outright lies.

When asked by someone if they can borrow your boat, or whatever, I want you to remember this technique. Tony Robbins would be envious of its effect on human behavior, yet it is truly elegant, dignified and what must be an esoteric response given the confusion around the issue. When asked by someone if they can borrow a prized possession that you do not want to lend, I want you to say the following:

"No"

Some foks dont seem to know that a boat is not like a car. Just because you drive a car doesn't mean you know how to operate a boat. Just like an airplane. Who would ever let someone who does not fly borrow his airplane because failure to know hoe to operate it just like a boat can GET YOU KILLED.

Re: Neighbor asked to borrow my Chaparral

You want to what?

LMBOFBO! (laugh my big ole fat butt off), gfaw, gfaw, hee, hee, hee, TDF (too damn funny) ....

Then again. lem-me see .... the boat's worth 20 grand, hmmm I'll use the "ten times" rental rule, so the rental fee will be 2 grand, plus a bond in the amount of the 20 grand ....

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? Where you goin'?
