new 2 strokes are as clean or cleaner than the 4 strokes

Why would that be?? Whether the old carbureted or new EFI 2 strokes both still burn oil and gas as they fire............4 strokes burn Gas only. Hmmmm

Maybe because burning gas creates pollution, too.

Newer inboards now require catalytic converters on them. Wait until your 4 stroke outboards are required to have them. The Evinrude E-TEC is one of the cleanest 2 stroke outboards out there.

Whether you pour gas in the water or oil, what's the difference? The crux of the matter is HOW MUCH pollution you discharge.

The new DFI 2-strokes are simply very fuel efficient. If they meet the CARB requirements that's all you have to worry about.

Since all you asked about was pollution, I won't bother listing the other 98 reasons why a 2 is better than a 4!

I'll name a few of the many. Lighter, much simpler, fewer and less complicated service intervals.

What is the probability of a 2 stroke grenading as a result of fuel quality, over heating or running lean compared to a 4 stroke?

Excellent question. Maybea marine engineer could chime in with the best answers. My guess would be that problems due to fuel quality and over-heating would be equal for both types. Obviously, running lean would be detrimental only to a 2-stroke because of reduced lubrication, but then again the sophisticated MPEMs should alert the Operator accordingly.

The only lean issues I ever heard of were with 1970+- vintage Mercs, but those issues have been non-existant for years.

4 strokes develop holed pistons from lean fuel mixtures, seized motors from overheating and plugged fuel systems from bad fuel - Same as 2 strokes. How bad things get depends on the sophistication of the ECMs.

In that claim they include the oil used in the crankcase of the 4 stroke, This means the less you use the motor the more the 4 stroke pollutes in comparison to the 2 stroke. This is because you are supposed to change the oil at least once per year in the 4 stroke whether you use it or not.

I don't bother worrying about the claims by either group, both types run well and pollute far less than just a short time ago.

That's the bottom line.

Re: New 2 strokes versus 4 strokes

WIth all the fancy computerized stuff on the newer DI 2-strokes that the average person would have no possibility to have the tools to work on , I think it's a tossup on whether to buy the 2 or 4 stroke today. (I do like the looks of that etec, though!) But, I'm hoping I'll be able to run my old 2-strokes with carbs until I'm pushing up daisies.

the "average" person has no idea how to work on a carbureted 2 stroke either.

Working on a modern outboard is no harder or easier than it was before. It just takes a different skill set. Instead of wrenching away at a problem you hook up a laptop to find out what is wrong. Takes less skills to repair if anything because it's mostly repair by replacement.

The tools to fix today's motor problems are no more specialized than the electronic meters used to diagnosis problems in motors of the last century.

It was the laptop hookup and software to read all the computer info that I was referring to as far as fancy equipment. It's not proprietary or can just anyone can get their hands on it? I consider myself pretty average.... :)

Don't know about others, but Bombardier software is proprietary. Now, I'm sure someone will come along and say their BIL works at the marina and they pirated the software, but its not available to the averege person.

It seem 2 stroke and 4 stroke motors have about the same level of computer controls today. If that is so it seems all of the moving parts in a 4 stoke are a big disadvantage. Weight is another factor.
