New Boat with stress cracking

I love this website and I believe there are very knowledgeable people that browse through the links so I want to post this question on what you think I should do or be compensated for.
Last year I bought a 2006 Proline 21 Center Console with a Venture trailer and Suzuki Engine all rigged from a dealer. This year while I was waxing my boat and taking care of it like any other responsible boater would I noticed stress cracking around the front two rollers of my trailer(6-8 inches long). I knew this wasn't right so I inspected under there some more and noticed that where all the rollers came in contact with the boat there were indents because from what I believed was too much weight. I contacted my dealer and took it back and he told me today that after inspecting the boat that Venture trailers recommended the wrong trailer for my boat and its weight. The dealer also said that they didn't see any stress cracking but I believe that was because they had the boat suspended in the air so the stress was off the hull where it normally would be when on the trailer.

They said they will replace the rollers with bunks and fix a few more problems with the trailer for me but they said they found no structural damage to the boat. Now I know there is two nice cracks in the hull that are more then just a few mm deep. I am worried that after a year of being on a trailer that was too small and after many hundreds of miles being pulled down the road that there might be a possibility of damage. Am i wrong about this? I would hate to not say anything and then a few years from now have an unrepairable boat or something that I couldn't get rid of. I take so much good care of this boat and paid many dollars that I don't want to get screwed. What would you guys do? Any type of comment would be appreciated. Sorry that this post was so long!

That's a tough one. There are a bunch of people here who will be surprised by your post as, even though roller trailers causing this kind of damage is often reported, the roller trailer fans treat it like an urban legend or myth...

Re: New Boat with stress cracking

Let's say that the end of your finger is the bottom of your hull. Take a nail and press down - ouch! That's what the bottom of your boat feels - pinch points - or pressure points. There is a lot of weight resting on a very small surface area - hence the stress cracks. I've always trailered with bunks but as bjcsc mentioned there will be a lot of discussion about the issue. There just is no way that a roller system will distribute the weight of your boat the way a bunk does - no way!!! The rollers are nice for loading but that in my opinion is where they stop being functional. Besides, how many boats need to be wrenched up the trailer anyway? I don't see that many at the ramp. Most all are drive on's or 'power loading' if you will. Your boat dealer should fix your problem and replace your roller system. But that is just another opinion.

What he said
Ditto !! Pro-Line General Manager, John E. Walker. send him an eMail.

It's Bunks for support!! Rollers for flexing !! IMHO.
I never could understand the concept of roller trailers, except for the "easy load factor". The small "contact patch" of (all) the rollers holding a boats weight has to put pressure, on the hull, at the point of contact and could never distribute the weight evenly.
If you have 24 rollers the total support contact area maybe 12", probably less.

Re: New Boat with stress cracking

i just got a follow up from the owner of the company i bought the boat from and he said that if there is any damage to the boat neither Pro-Line or Venture trailers will cover the damage. Do you think i have a case if i hire a lawyer and there is damage?

The dealer is in FULL CYA MODE it is on you to nail down all partys on paper

The contact with Proline is very inportant YOU MUST get them to put there viewpoint on paper a phone call is useless

While it is NOT there fault they are the EXPERT in the structural integrity of the product

They need to go on the record, IS the hull is damaged or not damaged

It is one of many steps in the Documentation process

You need to do the same thing with Venture trailers as to what trailer you recieved and what trailer you should have recieved

You said that the package was put together by your dealer. If that is the case I can see why Pro-line and Venture refusing responsibility since it was the dealer who mismatched or setup the trailer incorrectly that caused the damage. Hopefully Pro-line can put pressure on your dealer to make things right but don’t expect neither of the manufacturers to be accept responsibility for the problem.

Maybe you can go about it another way. What kind of guarantee did you have on the hull? Does Pro-line state anything about trailer selection in their hull guarantee? If not then make a claim for hull damage against the Pro-line hull warranty program and let Pro-line fight it out with your dealer.

I bought a 2006 Proline 21 Center Console with a Venture trailer and Suzuki Engine all rigged from a dealer.

This is where you make your claim against the dealer. They delivered the package to you- they are responsible for making you whole.

I contacted my dealer and took it back and he told me today that after inspecting the boat that Venture trailers recommended the wrong trailer for my boat and its weight.

This is where the dealer makes a claim against Venture to recoup their losses in compensating you.
