New LSA 557 hp outboard WOW

I saw a company that builds a 557 hp 4 stroke V8 outboard, it's called 7 Marine, Basically they take a Cadillac aluminum V8 that is supercharged & intercooled, supply drive by wire, GM MEFI, closed loop cooling, horizontal mount to a ZF transmission that has a slip ratio allowing for trolling or running which ever you need and are setting the outboard world on its ear with efficiency and weight gains over the other high horsepower outboards available, Mostly targeted at re-powers and offshore fishing boats in the 33 foot plus range this thing looks like a Verado on steroids and was designed by the very same individual that did the Opti-Max & Verado series motors. Love new technology!

the prototype was being worked on in 2010. with the launch in early 2011. I actually know both Jim and Eric Davis. I did the original sizing calculations for the heat exchangers. it is an impressive piece.

the platform without the shrouds is more impressive than with the shrouds.

Any boat rated for 600 hp would handle twins. I'd take twin 350hp @ $45k over a $70k 557hp in a heart beat

Not me. Of course these are no where near my budget either. But the guys fishing offshore in $250,000+ hulls won't mind trading in 4 or 3 for 2 of these, the power/weight and efficiency are unbeatable for hi-power outboards.

Beautiful application of an aluminum V8!

The Merc 300XS has a much better power/ weight ratio and the same if not better efficiency.

Marine 7 = 0.509:1
300XS = 0.594:1

Twin 300xs gives you more HP with less weight and the redundancy you want offshore.

Twin 300xs give less weight simply based upon less mass and reduced displacement, they do not give more hp @ 600 vs. 1114 really not a measurement, more of a fact. The 557 certainly weighs more @ 1094 lbs. dry than the 300sx @ 505 lbs. but then it's basic design is much more robust and is intended for boats that exceeding 30 ft. in length? One would have to stack 4 300sx on a transom to move the boat with the efficiency of 2 557's at which point you now have roughly 2,000 lbs. of motors hanging off the rear with either model.

The efficiency of this motor appears to be in multiple applications and on boats that are simply not capable of stacking 3 or more 300sx's to achieve the same level of performance that twin 557's offer much less in triple or quads applications for 40 to 60 ft. offshore center console performance fishers. In large boats & by boaters that prefer serious horsepower in a 4 stroke V8 application the 300sx is not comparative any longer nor is it efficient in triple or quad applications. It's just different technology. Yes the entry price is higher, in fact it's outrageous by comparison but the cost efficiency and comparative life longevity of this 4 stroke will show a much higher overall efficiency than the 2 stroke 300's measured in decimal application.

I hate spam....but I like the new technology perhaps in the next 10 yrs. they will become affordable used, after all, adapted automotive long blocks are much less expensive to zero time than the 2 stroke motors of today. The LS series is adapting quite effectively in the marine & aerospace industries, I think it would be great to have a car, boat & light aircraft with the same power plant, talk about ease of maintenance and familiarity with operational parameters.
