Re: New small SUV?

Since the OP is looking for something the size of an Escape, I don't think tow ratings are part of his criteria and the CR-V happens to be in the same size class as the Escape.

Escape is rated to pull 3500
CR-V is rated to pull 1500

OP never said anything about if he wanted to tow anything with it, especially if you see the boat in his profile.

Base tow rate is also 1500 with the 4 cylinder engine.

Not sure I would be wanting to pull much of anything with version that is rated for the higher amount.

Re: New small SUV?

Can you explain this to me please?

If I were to run out of gas, and the fuel fill was on the drivers side, I would have to stand in the flow of traffic to fill from a gas can.

If that is a real concern - then you have other problems, like failure to pay attention. Running a modern car completely out of gas can cause some issues. Are there many vehicles made with a passenger side fill? Don't remember the last time I saw one.

I wouldn't drive either one - you can fit more stuff in a mid sized sedan if all you are looking for is stuff and people transporting. He is also talking about downgrading from a land Rover - an escape or CRV would get you a swift kick in the privates making that switch ;)

Way back in the 60's Volvo used to put in on the passenger side because they said it was safer as far as the frequency of getting hit on that side. Of course Volvo also switched the fill to the left side eventually.

Depends on what you are hauling. My criteria is being able to put bicycles inside. Something I can't currently do with my Lexus GS.

You can put bicycles inside an escape? I find that hard to believe

Mine is on the passenger side and it is an inconvenience when there is a line of cars at the pump.

No sure yet either. That is why I am looking at a number of vehicles. Would have to have the front tire off which I currently do anyway even in the back of my pickup. Fits fine in my GF's Element which is also based on the Civic.

Also, the CRV may be based on the Civic, it doesn't share the transmission or the engine so not sure how similar they really are.

Not really a concern, but just one of the many things I look for when researching a car. Much like preferring a lift gate rather than a swing gate.

For the OP: You did not mention towing. Have you taken a look at the Nissan Rogue? Starting with the 2013 model it will be made in TN.

The wife spent a year looking at most of the things mentioned in this thread and settled on the Rouge. It can tow small loads, class 1. If I were going to tow I think I would go AWD for about $1500 more and 2 MPG less. She is getting the 29 mpg estimated milage and that is pretty darn good in my mind for such a comfortable skateboard.

I like ponies but love torque. What are the torque numbers on that turbo 4?

It gets 269 from 1850 - 4850

The other thing though is you through that 30K number around like 30k is nothing.

More of a statement of how cars are way too expensive that didn't come out well...cars are just so expensive and it seems to me like Hyundai/Kia are still on the lower end of the cost spectrum but have managed to put out a desireable product.

Those are amazing numbers from a 4 cylinder. I agree on the cars being very expensive. Somehow reality diverged from car prices and people have no problem paying 6 years to buy a car or borrow it via a lease. I stay one step behind the times like 3 or so years and while I never get the latest and greatest I can pay cash for severely depreciated suv's.

If tow rating is a concern, note that the Highlander V6 (the gas version, not hybrid) is the ONLY mid-size SUV rated for 5000lbs. The others are maxed out at 3500lbs. Love mine (a base 2012 4x4 V6 with towing package).

Re: New small SUV?

I bought my '07 Forester brand new and have put 140k miles on it. It has proven excellent for everything I've pushed it to do. An awesome AWD system that's far superior compared to everyone else's with a full time 50/50 split, 2.5L longitudinal flat 4 has tons of low end torque, manual transmission availability, heavy duty suspension, great brakes (didn't have to service fronts till 104k).

I've carried over 1k lbs inside it and towed over 4k lbs with it (not too far, and I wouldn't do it again, but hey I did it).

I would definitely recommend it.

This movie is a few years old but it's like everyone else's AWD doesn't even try. You'd be better off to save the money

Not so. The Nissan XTerra also has a 5000# rating and the Pathfinder has a 6000.

Not really, or maybe I shoud have been more specific: by mid-sized SUV (wich is a very loosely defined category BTW), I thought of uniboby construction, as opposed to body-on-frame. Unibodies ride like cars, are more economical, less stiff and heavy. Body-on-frame are, basically, trucks with a fixed shell.

The XTerra is a truck, as is the 4Runner so I don't count it as a SUV. But I agree that the new 2013 Pathfinder, wich is now of unibody constrution and rated for 5000lbs, is also a contender. Nissan switched it three times in the past years back and forth between unibody and body-on-frame. The 2012, rated for 6000lbs, is a truck like the Cherokee or the Yukon, not a SUV in my mind...

That is not really true. The early sorrentos like the one my wife had were body on frame and they rode as well or better than any unibody SUV. My 09 Ram is body on frame with coils all the way around and rides better than most suv's. BTW - the Cherokee is a unibody

My bad

You're right about the ride on full size truck now beeing really great (almost car-like, or even better!) but, the principle of contruction of a body-on-frame as opposed to a unibody will always make it heavier.
