Re: New small SUV?

My bad

You're right about the ride on full size truck now beeing really great (almost car-like, or even better!) but, the principle of contruction of a body-on-frame as opposed to a unibody will always make it heavier.

Not really again - if you look at vehicles that have gone from body on frame to unibody, you'll find that they weigh about the same. Just because there is not a separate frame does not mean that the frame isn't still there as part of the unibody ;) Compare a 2009 Durango to a 2011 Durango for example.

Re: New small SUV?

Maybe it was due to my limited experience with other brands but, beeing a long-time Toyota owner and having owning both, I can tell you that a 4Runner and a FJCruiser rode exactly like a Tacoma while a Highlander has the same handling characteristics than an Avalon or a Camry.

Each have pros and cons...

I can't make up my mind to consider a 4Runner or a FJ Cruiser beeing SUV's; for me, they're simply closed pickup trucks...

Huh? FJ Cruiser is a unibody

Re: New small SUV?

After having it 13 years, we just sold our '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 131K miles. It would get 22mpg on the highway (4.7 V-8) and was a great tow vehicle. The ONLY reason for selling was to get a center passenger shoulder belt in back, and the wife decided we should have 3rd row seating. Bought a '07 Jeep Commander that I hope will get 20 mpg. 7000# tow rating would have towed that 23' Penn Yan hardtop wife's aunt and uncle had for sale that I sure wish we would have bought! Oh, well! My wife didn't want anything bigger, and I felt any of the smaller SUVs that might have had 3rd row seating would not have been adequate. The Commander has the Quadra-DriveII 4x4 system (limited slip diffs front and rear, and in T-case) which will be great this winter. I have a hard time not recommending the Jeep SUV, but it may be bigger than you want. Our '96 Grand Cherokee was great, too. Bought my '97 Wrangler new and it's still my daily driver.

Re: New small SUV?

OP here.

We test drove quite a few vehicles over the past few weeks. We've narrowed it down to 2 vehicles. The Toyota Venza and the Ford Edge. By the time out Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) is added in there is close to $15k difference between the two. DW is like one person has said, the vehicle must have almost every option available. Both are AWD, both have Nav, both have leather power seats. The only real difference I see is ride height and the Toyota has slightly more noise on the highway. I found the touch screen on the Edge to be too complicated while driving. Since I do most of the highway driving I don't want to be distracted by a complicated touch screen.

We drove the Nissans, Rogue ans Murano. Liked the Murano, but a mechanic made us shy away from it. In short, quality has recently gone down slightly in the Nissans. Drove the Rav, barely made it off the lot, because we didn't like the whine from the tranny. BIL had one and loved it while had it, but we didn't like it. Drove the Jeep Patriot and found noise too high before took it off the lot.

My parents had a Kia. The Kia service manager told her she abused the tranny by driving from Edmonton to Vancouver. Mountain driving is considered abuse. I thought it was weird too but I wasn't there so I can't comment. We live in a province with quite a few steep hills. Just visiting family requires driving hills, since we live in a small valley, so that made us nervous about the Kia's.

Right now DW is leaning to the Venza. Right price, right options. Her vehicle her decision, she does ask my opinion so I do have some input. I hope she gets the 6cylinder instead of the four. But it is a slightly higher price, mileage difference is negligible.

I won't be towing with this, I have my truck for that. None of the vehicles we looked at are capable of towing my toys. Everything big enough to tow my stuff is bigger than DW is interested in.

Re: New small SUV?

I seem to recall the Venza got really bad reviews as a sort of vehicle that didn't need to be. The only thing that really stuck out in my mind was the downside of the sloped hatch that limited the height of cargo. In other words the review was trying to get across - why buy a hatch vehicle that limits the purpose of a hatch vehicle? The Ford touch screen controls have gotten a bad rap as being too complex but I understand the recent upgrade corrected at least some of that. I presume the Venza was new but was the Ford Edge also new?

I think you would get used to the touch screen, but I will say that I had the same experience with an Edge rental car. Too much stuff to figure out in the first 15 minutes, complicated by the previous renter setting it to Spanish ;) But if I had driven it for a couple weeks I suspect it would have been fine.

Mazda cx9 is the same platform as the Edge. I wonder if it has the same display.

Yes, both were 2013 models. They weren't at the very top of the model lineup but were only a small step down from the top. The only real difference was way they rode. The Edge was had a more truck like feel. The Venza felt more like a car.

I'm not too worried about the cargo volume. If the load is that close to filling the hatch my truck will most likely be the one we take. The new vehicle will be mainly a grocery getter, or of we go somewhere with another couple, they will be comfortable in the back seat.

Re: New small SUV?

If tow rating is a concern, note that the Highlander V6 (the gas version, not hybrid) is the ONLY mid-size SUV rated for 5000lbs. The others are maxed out at 3500lbs. Love mine (a base 2012 4x4 V6 with towing package).

MDX gets 5000lbs and Pilot gets 4500lbs, which are in the same class as the Hylander.

I am looking at the Subaru Impreza Wagon for my fiance. 36MPG, AWD, and lots of storage w/ a hatch.

Re: New small SUV?

If you are looking used, go for a Buick Rainier. If going new look for a Buick Enclave. You won't disappointed.

I'll just mention that my wife has one of the final Buick Rainiers off the line when the Enclave replaced it. She loves it as it has every piece of equipment offered but understand it is also our main tow vehicle being it is a full truck frame with a large v8 in it. You can get them cheap given they were 45k new but it isn't exactly a small suv so much as a midsized, 5000lb truck. I'd highly recommend one but you have to be willing to live with v8 gas mileage.

Re: New small SUV?

Or get one with the smaller V-6.

They had a smaller 4.2 liter Inline 6 as the base engine with a lot less torque but both the v8 and the I6 get the same mileage. You just had to pay a bunch to get the V8 option but there was no mpg penalty to have it. The v8 also has displacement on demand/Active fuel management like all the GM 5.3's have since the mid 2000's. It was more marketing and Cafe standards driven then actual fuel savings. The i6 was a great engine if you didn't tow but its downside was it was just a gas hog.

Regardless, it's not in the same class as the OP's subject vehicles.

Re: New small SUV?

Bought my wife an Edge Limited in June. The touch screen controls have never been an issue for us (maybe because we're both a bit geeky) We LOVE the Edge! Yep the ride is sporty stiff but never uncomfortable. Power is great, brakes were greatly improved after the '10 year. Its pearl white metallic, loaded, with the power moon roof, chocolate leather interior and 20" wheels. (maybe some of the ride stiffness issues right there) She gets 19 mpg in town and 25 highway. I am allowed to drive it to the car wash under strict supervision only.:(

BIL had an Enclave. It was a beautiful vehicle but too large for what Dw wants.

Agreed. The only big beefs I could come up with are the lack of torque/need to bring rpms way up to get it to move out and the too-high resale value. I'm used to having all v8's for a long time now and so the move down to a v6 is instantly noticable when the vehicles are equal weight. I love a good high content vehicle that drops in price like a rock after a few years.

That was another reason she has decided on the Venza. The reslae value is higher than an equivalent "US" vehicle. It has been ordered, now all we have to do is wait for it to arrive.

Exactly why I won't consider foreign vehicles as a used buyer. Great when your the first buyer not when you're the second.
