Re: New to me...

Nice boat. FYI, that motor is a good bit older than 1989. More like 1975. Check the model number to find out. That's probably why you can't find much on the motor. They stopped making the 135 and it became the 140 somewhere in the late 70's. Once you determine what year it is, you can look for the appropriate manual to help you with changing the impeller, etc etc. Welcome to the forum.

Second, while it may seem costly, take it to a reputable outboard engine mechanic for that make.

how much would an average place charge for something like that? should i trust someone on craigslist to do it? I've seen a few people advertise... I did check the compression and it seems good, though i dont know what the normal should be but they are all close...
1-120psi
2-125psi
3-130psi
4-130psi

3 - Trailer (wheel bearings, tire inspection, lights-I noticed a tailight lens missing.)

I fixed the taillights already... dont really want to be pulled over on my way lol

32_d3gr33s I'm also in MI.

I live west of grand rapids... in Allendale. its a little bit of a drive.

FYI, that motor is a good bit older than 1989.

I did a little more research last night and turns out its a 1974... where the guy came up with 89 i have no idea...

on another note, anybody ever paint the motor? it looks a little crusty and i was more than likely going to paint the boat to match my car

any ideas on what paint to use on the boat or the motor?

On another side note... my brother just picked this behemoth up yesterday... its going to be his winter project :D

Nice looking boat! How long did you let it run without water peeing out? Sometimes it takes a few seconds.

You seem to be progressing pretty quickly on this stuff. I'm a relative rookie in boating too. Bought a boat at the beginning of the summer and just sold and upgraded last week. I did have a boat many years ago, but I was really starting over here. Even though I've done some stuff on the first boat (replaced a starter and a few other odd things), I didn't feel comfortable buying the other boat without it being checked out. I have a mobile boat mechanic that I knew of and he charges $135 for a boat evaluation when someone is buying a boat. It was worth the money to me to have him verify everything and tell me a) all the problems he found, and b) all the common problems my motor may run into.

I would suggest also that you try to find someone with boating experience to go out with you the first time at least. It can be very stressful around the launch the first time out.

You should be able to find out everything you need here. http://search.ebscohost.com/ username:marshall, password: public. Go to Small engines and click on marine motors. Wow, your brother is starting big!

No. 1: do not tell your brother you'll help him get that one running!

If you haven't already, use fresh gas, and if you have an old tank, be sure it's clean. Are your tanks removable? If so, they are probably 6 gallon tanks. You need two.

Don't use starting fluid on an outboard; it can damage the motor. Once is probably OK.
I'm not sure a 78 has a pee stream. I think they came in the 80's.

Re: New to me...

That boat looks a lot like one a friend had back jr. high school--a 16' Scat Craft with a 135. Probably a 1971 or 72. It would fly, and put out a big rooster. We weren't allowed to go out in it (but we all did!)
It's a specialty boat--use on calm days for speed. You can pull people but be careful with the power/speed. it will be scary fast, and slides a lot on turns. When you punch it, the bow rises way up and you can't see (another friend with a similar boat drilled into the side of a sailboat that way).
Looks like a rework is needed on the prop but you can still use it.
Takes me back....

Re: New to me...

Homecookin, EZmobee are you just referring to that motor not having a pee stream? I have several older but smaller ones that do. I'm working on an 85hp of that vintage and have'nt fired it up yet. If it does that mist thing also I'm glad to learn that now.

Re: New to me...

I was just speculating b/c I recall first seeing one on a 1988 when it was new but not on previous motors we had at the time. Since then I've acquired old motors but never paid attention to years with or without. Come to think about it, I think a 72 merc 20 has one, not sure. And I suppose they could be added.
To the OP: lots of motors don't pee at first, or at all, on muffs. look for a tube running from the engine block to the bottom rear of the engine housing. Also on old motors, they get clogged with mildew or even (as I recently experienced) disconnected, spraying the inside of the motor!

it starts a little hard without it, what would be the best thing to look at first... What if I put some of the gas in a spray bottle, would that help? Works on my rc car lol

How can I tell if it's supposed to or not?

Yes !!! Use the same mixture you use on in your gas tank. You need the oil in the premix for a 2-stroke or you get no lube. That, of course is bad news.

Re: New to me...

Exhaust pressure relief holes so the motor will run when the boat is not moving or moving slowly and the prop exhaust is at it's deepest point which creates back-pressure. Good luck!

a simple test would be that you should be able to hold your hand on the head for a few seconds without getting burned.
