We left there and went to local stores to buy milk, ice cream, and feed. I didn't see any hitching posts but I remember in the deal they were to make a grass parking area for horses. This walmarts has fishing stuff, guns, and most everything a regular walmarts has only with less choices per type of item. It also only has 10 checkouts. No salons but it does have tires and lube.
That the kind of wall mart we had in Brownwood, then they built a super wally world, I hate it. Just wares me out. I usually wind up setting on the old folks bench up front till the wife gets through shopping.

Why cant they put the fishing stuff up front where I dont have to walk 2 miles?

Local store diet coke 1.68 +.20 recycle fee +.10 surcharge (goes to coke - didn't want to raise the price so they got the gov. to tack on a fee).

Wal Mart .97 +.20 +.10 guess where we buy DC. 50+ mile drive so when there we buy lots! (where we have to do for Dr. appts (except for GP).

And, we only have ourselves to blame - better stop the rant before I get up a full head of steam.

BTW, when I with a daughter (in Utah) she won't stop at Wal Mart for me!

Re: New Walmart (Update)

I wish they'd build a walmart around here. All I've got is K-mart, Target, and Fred Meyer. All of which have about half the selection and significantly higher prices. I usually end up at all 3 before I find what I'm looking for.

Everybody always complains about Walmart's customer service, but what department store in this country DOES have good service? I've never been to one. Frankly if I had the choice I would go to a store completely devoid of employees. I already know what I want before I get there and usually know more about the product than the people selling it...

Re: New Walmart (Update)

Not too many years ago, here in Cincinnati Oh we had a few local chain stores, family stores that grew to 4 or 5 stores. There was Sight-in-sound, they sold car stereos, TV's and top of the line home stereo's. There was Steinbergs, they sold home appliances, TV's and home stereo's. There was Swallens, they sold just about everything, from high performance car parts, to kids toys, as well as home appliances and stereos. We had Hader Hardware, and several other home grown hardware stores. I can't even remember all of the local owned restaurants. Today, they are all gone. Many of the local boating centers are being squeezed to death by the national chains. When and where will it end ? americans are getting fed up...more and more by poor service and sales/service clerks that have no clue. Do you understand that where and how you buy has the largest impact on what service you receive ? Your neighborhood store/shop cannot compete with the large retailers, on price alone, what they can do is know you and service your needs. Not too many years ago, people expected and received service on what they bought. In some situations the store owner actually supplied a replacement and even brought it to their house. They did this because they cared about their customers. Try to find that in today's chain store attitude. Years ago, when my father bought a new TV from the local store and he had problems , he would call the store owner at home....and demand service...guess what ...he got it. Besides good customer relations, he got it because he would see the store OWNER at Church on Sunday. Today it's all about cheap prices when purchasing something....who cares about customer service ?

Just don't come back blaming Bush for the loss of manufacturing jobs as you're buying chinese cr@p at walmart.
Very true! Blame the unions that caused American manufacturing prices to go well beyond the reasonable.

When and where will it end ?
When the locals stop being over-priced or learn how to compete in a free market. Hint: Don't compete on commodity items, offer something else.

You also can't blame just Wal-mart; personally I spend far more at eBay and other online sources. Why should I pay $321 (list plus tax) for a VHF radio at the local places when I can order it on eBay for $228 (cost plus shipping)? I'm ready to pay a LITTLE extra for my local merchants, but not 30% more. On top of that, they didn't actually stock it, so I'd have to wait anyway.

I've spent a bunch of money at West Marine also; with sales and coupons the prices are often decent. The local guys always cost more and have less in stock. Where should I go again?

Wal-mart beats them all on things they stock. Hmmm...basic bumper for $45 or $28? Wal-mart has a 90 day return policy, while the local guy has a "NO RETURNS" policy. Which one has "good service" again?

I've been in the new store 2 times now and you really have to watch what price rings up vs. what it is marked. Other then that it is pretty handy to have around.

posted by SLOOPY
"you are kidding about a hitching post for the amish right?"

I rode around the parking lot today and they do have a small covered building with a hitching post and room for about 6 horses complete with yellow lines and a watering spigot.

Re: New Walmart (Update)

I don't really care but wally world does a real number for the chineese economy. With that in mind there are those who would live with far less if WW wasn't there and for that we should be grateful.

My reasons are that the store is laid out terribly. First the isles are so narrow that one woman with a 50" waist wearing pumpkin colored polyester stretch pants weighing the nutritional value of a 36 count box of twinkees vs. a box of HOHO's can hold me up for minutes. To help accomidate they offer you the shopping cart "LITE". It is small enough to manuver the narrow isles but too small to carry anything but toothpaste or "D" cell batteries. The old folks who greet you are great then you enter the store and get that teenage associate with the vapid 500 yard stare than convinces you they don't do random drug testing. And no matter what department they are in, they know NOTHING about the products whatsoever. Also the products you buy at the box stores are frequently not of the same quality as the specialty shops. Even if they look the same and are the same brand name.

Then there is the parking lot. This is a survival test. First can you get in and out without someone giving you a fresh door ding or battle scar. Then the isles in the lot were designed by the same guy who did the shelves in the store. It seems that many WW shoppers think that if they cruise the lot for 30 or 40 minutes they can save themselves a 1 or 2 minute walk created by parking further away. This has become a sport. And a dangerous one at that. It is amazing what a mother with a baby on board sign will do to secure a front five row parking spot. They should change the little sign to "Get the F%(k out of my way I saw that spot first." This applies to those on foot as well as in a vehicle. I have been known to go to WW sometimes but I have a very special vehicle for those special moments, 94 ford bronco. I win everytime.

I used to buy all my dog food there cuz it was cheap and rated very high. Ol' Roy. Wife is in control of this new dog and it gets better eats than the master of the house. Good bye Ol' Roy.

Hey with Kmart around the corner with nothing more than an echo in the parking lot I more often then not pop the extra 2% it costs to shop there and save my sainity. They have better underwear as well.

Oh what a slice of America this place is. It's probably pretty telling to the rest of the world when they read this board just how spoiled we are. After all, how could anyone imagine the horror of having a multitude of goods, priced very competitively and all under one roof. That really sucks, doesn't it? We've now gotten to the point where we have sooo many choices and can get anything we need so easily that we now attack ourselves. It's truly sad. Go tell a person in Iraq or in Sudan or in Chile or in Cambodia how much it sucks to have a WalMart nearby.

Just shut up and don't go there. Good Lord.

UFM82

Hey, our WW just opened on Tuesday! Been there 3 times already. It sure is nice to have a place open after 5pm! Got a few marine accessories (but they can't touch iboats.com), and some good prices on hunting and fishing equipment. No hitching post though, which surprises me because we do have a fairly large Amish population around us.
