Re: no brake or turn signal

It sound like the converter is just on the hairy edge and works intermittently.
The new one may be just a little closer to the edge than the older one.

Just for experimental purposes to see if we are looking at the real problem; Pull the bulbs or disconnect the Amber side lights and see if the issue goes away.

If it doesn't we can rule out the overloaded converter theory.

Another thought.....
You may have a bulb that is about to burn out and is pulling too much current and causing your symptoms.
An AMP Meter in the Green and Yellow leads could detect that.
An intermittent short in the trailer wiring would do the same thing.

Left Turn Signal Works = Yellow Circuit INTO and OUT of Converter OK
Right Turn Signal Works = Green Circuit INTO and OUT of Converter OK
Brake Lights ??? = Red Circuit INTO the Converter ???

Emergency Flashers = Both Turn Signals at the Same time
Only Right Side Flashes = Green Circuit Good And Yellow Circuit Faulty.

Still looking like a converter issue.

Trouble shooting rule #2
If the symptoms make no sense at all and it appears to be magic; It is most likely a Ground Issue.

Triple check that White Ground Wire coming from the converter.
It should be touching clean bare metal under the lug, NO Paint.
Do Not trust the screw to carry the current.

The Curt Web site shows the #55382 Converter only has ONE White wire.
You have TWO???

What an ordeal.
Really have to wonder why you have amber side lights hooked up to the brake light circuit?
All running lights should be hooked into the tail light circuit.

The only other suggestion, as it is the answer to ALL towing/trailer issues, is that you NEED a new Ford F350. I can't believe it hasn't been suggested yet.

Re: no brake or turn signal

there is 1 white wire for the converter ground.I added another ground wire that is bolted to the suv,to make sure it was a very good ground,so ground is made in 2 diffrent spots, even made sure the paint was removed...just got up and rechecked everything, only running lights work....no brake or blinkers, even unpluged the 2 amber lights and still nothing...................

Re: no brake or turn signal

Hey man sorry you are having such a time of it!!! This kind of stuff can test your sanity!!! You are doing a good job staying after it, most would have thrown in the towel!!!

One more thing to look at and maybe you already have, is the suv wiring harness just in front of the converter hook-up. I don't know if you originally installed the converter or a previous owner of the jeep, but some times people pierce the wires with a pointed test light to figure out which wire is which. If the converter is a plugin style they probably did not do this but it is still a good idea to get a visual on the wires for that issue. If pierced the wires will swell up and turn green and fail eventually. Also look for scotch locks that's also a NO-NO!! both of those issues can cause a lot of grief!!!

I can see having one bad converter and you changed it and you have the same result. I wouldn't think you would have two bad converters. But with Murphy's law it's not for 100%, but maybe 99.

Good luck!!

Re: no brake or turn signal

I still would have wired it up direct without the converter even if I had to add a couple of small lights on the back of the trailer for turn signals.

That is crazy and apparently bad converters or wiring harness for converter is wired wrong.

Maybe even switch bulbs on trailer to LED's to bring voltage/amp requirements down..

Wow

Re: no brake or turn signal

With the converter unpluged, and the jeep wiring put back to original factory setup, do the jeep lights operate correctly?

If they do, and we know the trailer is good, other than the forward facing amber brake lights, then it's pointing back at the converter?

The Jeep's lights have never been a problem with the trailer attached or not.
The Trailer's lights are intermittent when attached to the jeep.
The trailers lights work when tested separate from the Jeep, but intermittently when attached.

The problem is in the connection, and the connection point is the converter.

This thread has taken on a life of it's own! :D

Re: no brake or turn signal

yes the lights on the jeep are fine, never a problem....the trailer is a hit and miss, sometimes they(brake&blinkers) will work, sometimes only with the motor running, but the jeep lights have never fail to work,,,never got a reply from curt yet....you can unplug the trailer at anytime or plug it in and jeep lights never miss a beat, its only on the trailer side,,,,all wires on trailer are solder and heat shrink and new....all the lights are seal, you cannnot change bulbs,100% wterproof,I even checked with a light to make sure no water ....if I don't get a answer from them soon.I might try a MODULITE HD 119190 converter........

Re: no brake or turn signal

I started just buying stuff for towing only from Reese. I used to have several trucks that were used and had a lot of issues till I swapped to their stuff and it stopped.
