I have a mercruiser 140, when the key is in the on position both sides of the coil read right at 10v. I have no fire out of the coil, i put on a new coil, still same problem. Any suggestions?

And the ignition system is..... points?, DDIS?, EST?

If you don't know, post the engine serial number and/or year (not the boat, the engine)...

Where to start....

1st, does the boat turnb over easily?

If yes, the batter is ok. If not, try to jump is and see.

It sounds as if the + connection to the coil is broken or high resistance. It can also be a faluty ignition switch dirty contact.

Try to determine which wire is from the + of the battery. One will be from the + and the other will go to the ignition system (Points or electronic system, whichever you have).

If you can identify it, then run a wire directly from the + of the battery to the ignition coil. Try to start the engine. If it runs, there is a break in your + wire (IE: track it down and fix it). You will have to remove the jumper to stop the engine.

140HP? I assume it's points, have you looked at the points, changed them, set dwell and timing?

If the ignition hasn't been worked on in a while it might be best to do a complete tune-up on the ignition, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condenser,,, and then set the dwell and timing to spec.

BTW, 10V at the coil is normal, it uses a resistance wire to drop the voltage to the ignition. You should get a full 12V while cranking the engine though.

did you actually check the coil output? or just assuming so since theres no fire at the plugs?? could be numerous options...

It is a points system, all are new, points condenser cap rotor and coil are new. i tried the jumber to the coil still no fire out the coil. i tested coil output with a plug at the end of coil wire...

Real quick test... Pull the dissy cap off and watch the points gap while the engine is cranked.... See a spark between the points? Good.... Problem is the coil... No spark, start looking for why.

So did it have spark before the new points and everything else were put in? If it did... i'm guessing somebody did the points wrong.

PS~ you can properly test a coil with a spark plug, you need some kind of adjustable gap tester.
