Captain Stupid hit a sand bar in the middle of a lake...(did not know about the draw down on the resevoir ) The next day it revved a bit higher than normal before clunking into forward gear. That was the last time the boat went forward on its own power. I still had reverse so I backed all the way to my slip on the other side of the lake. Question is, I removed the lower unit and now have to decide if it is worth trying to repair? Or should I search for a replacement? I only have about $1,200 into the boat and if it costs more than $500 to repair I may have to sell it for salvage. I have two mercruiser books that are pretty much worthless. I can fabricate any tools I may need, I just don't want to waste a bunch of time trying to fix a POS or taking it apart if no parts are available. Thanks in advance for any info.

It's 42 years old and most (If not all) of the parts for that drive are NLA (No Longer Available) from Mercruiser.

I found another lower unit in the salvage yard. I put a new water pump in and installed it. Now I get forward but no reverse. I think I may have misaligned the shift linkage while installing it. Question is, is there and easier way to rotate the shifter arm without dropping the lower unit again?
