Re: no spark,. stator ,mercury switch

You know it never ceases to amaze me a how a customer will spend that kind of money on an old motor like the 1150 tower. I mean really would you buy a 1973 weedwacker at a garage sale? I give Carl Kiekhaefer all the credit in the world and admit he was way ahead of his time, but he did invent the Basic solid state CDI ignition which is still in use today. Granted the "Hall Effect" battery ignition was amazing too but who would have thought that the problem now would be the insulation on the wiring! I always hated working on these motors just because you had to have the patience of an archaeologist just not to destroy the wiring. I mean have you priced one of those wiring harnesses. At my old dealership we had one in stock never exposed to the sun in a somewhat temperature controlled room, went to pull it out of stock and poof a dusty cloud of insulation smoke. My advice is buy a Yamaha!

Be amazed these things will go a lot longer if the electrics are repaired/replaced.

Re: no spark,. stator ,mercury switch

.
ok the red is 12 V KEY OFF
THE WHITE WIRE HAD .02 TO .03 V ????? KEY OFF

RED 12 V KEY ON
WHITE CHANGED TO 12 V . KEY ON

THATS THE 4 WIRES ON STARBOARD SIDE . KEY ON & KEY OFF TEST .
CHECKED THE GREEN AND BROWN NOTHING KEY ON OR KEY OFF....

NOW THE DISTRUBTOR SIDE THE WIRES BLACK WHITE AND BROWN .
THE ONLY WIRE I GOT VOLTS WITH KEY ON AND OFF IS THE BROWN WIRE...
KEY OFF IT HAS .03V .AND THE KEY ON TEST WAS 11.5 VOLTS ,NOT 12 LIKE THE OTHER READING..

HOW DO I TEST THIS COIL IT HAS A GREEN AND BLACK WIRE .I TOUCHED ONE TO THE BLACK AND ONE TO THE GREEN,NEDDLED BURIED ITSELF...GOOD?

THEN I TESTED THE INSIDE OF THE COIL AND THE BLACK WIRE AND IT BURIED TOO .IT SHOULDNT DO THAT SHOULD IT ?????

6. Check voltage present on the Brown wire at cranking. It MUST be at least 9 volts. If not, the problem's likely in the pack.

is this brown wire from ignition or distrutor?theres 2 brown wires.one from tach and one from the distrubtor.....

well from what i posted the volts on the trigger side is working?goes from .03 v to 11.5 key on ,,,,,,the other side of the switchbox with 4 connections has 12 v .....why could i lose volts like that ? i was told the hv wire unscrews from the cap is this right? i need to to test .. i pulled it out of the coil.?

Copied this from the CDI Ignition Troubleshooting Manual available for FREE from CDIElectronics.com

NO SPARK
1. Connect a spark gap tester to the high-tension leads coming from the distributor cap and set the gap to approximately 7/16?.
(Use of a CD Tester is recommended).
2. Align the rotor with #1 spark plug wire. Disconnect the trigger wires and connect a jumper wire from the brown trigger
terminal to the white trigger terminal.
3. Connect another jumper wire to the black trigger terminal turn the ignition switch on. Strike the jumper wire from the black
terminal against engine ground ? (DO NOT HOLD THE JUMPER AGAINST ENGINE GROUND). Only the #1 spark plug
wire should fire. If any other spark plug wire has fire, there is a problem in the distributor cap.
4. Repeat the test for the other cylinders.

thats great. questions though .got a pic of the cd tester?"((Use of a CD Tester is recommended)".

so on the test...
(Disconnect the trigger wires )and connect a jumper wire from the brown trigger
terminal to the white trigger terminal. is this on the switch box ? i dont have CDI parts.i have the original parts. can i still do it with my old switch box?

Re: no spark,. stator ,mercury switch

Do the easy stuff first, try doing what i did last night...

so last night i went to work on the motor and this is where i am now.....

I found that cranking the motor with the key gives a spark, a very weak orange spark that wont jump from the boot to a bolt on the block like it should if it where strong....

So

i unhooked the wiring harnes to the motor and tried to string start it, when i noticed a niced bright purple spark!

What gives? Bad wiring harness or bad switch? Because it will give a str0ng spark with them disconnected

Re: no spark,. stator ,mercury switch

westexas has a newer ignition without a distributor, it is a late model mag style with a 'ground-to-kill', about the only similarity between the two systems are the spark plugs and wires.

Follow the directions I posted to test the old 'battery/cdi' ignition that you have. This test leaves out the trigger inside the distributor and allows you to test the CDI box and coil. If it passes this test then you will know that your problem is inside the distributor, and we can proceed from there.

Do the test and repost your results.

Re: no spark,. stator ,mercury switch

so do i unhook the distrubtor wires(3) and not use any of them at all for the test ?..................(Disconnect the trigger wires )and connect a jumper wire from the brown trigger terminal to the white trigger terminal. is this on the switch box ?

Re: no spark,. stator ,mercury switch

Yes, you are isolating the CDI box for testing, eliminating the trigger in the distributor from these tests. When you strick your test lead to ground you are then acting as the trigger.

If this test is successful then you will know the CDI is good and the problem is in the trigger.

Notice they are telling you to remove the cap, turn the motor til the rotor aligns with a spark plug post then reinstall the cap, this will also test the rotor, cap, and that plug wire. Repeat for each spark plug, tedious, but that will further eliminate suspected rotor, cap, and wire possibilities, leaving only the trigger as the only remaining possible problem.

hey i got a used stator but can in these pics i took show if its ok to use it has broken insulation? i guess its what it is exposing the wound wire .or does that just happen?its only on 3 or 4 .
