I have an 87 mercruiser with a 454 and a 2001 bravo 3. I have never had the motor and the outdrive in the water and was going to try and do something this weekend with it. I hooked the muffs up to the lower unit turned the water on from the water hose and let the motor run for a bit and it never even got water up to the circulating water pump. "I replaced the impeller on the raw water pump the other day b/c the pulley had locked up and would not turn. Opened up the raw water pump and the impeller was shot." do i need to take it to the lake and put the boat in and run it to see if it pics up water? Does it need to be primed somehow? I can tell you that the muffs were not big enough to cover all the holes on my lower unit.. could that have been my problem that air might be getting in? thanks for your help

If the muffs were not covering the water intakes that could very well be why it killed the new impeller.
I would test it next time on the trailer backed into the water...
Also did you lube the impeller blades when you put the new one in..
It helps on the first start up with all the air in the system.

Did you hook-up the hoses on the pump the correct way ,you can easly put them on backwards.

What are you planning on doing if they are right? Ruining another impeller?
Why don't you go up to the Adults only sticky at the top of this forum and download the OEM service manual and read how it's supposed to be instead of trial and error. If the impeller is burned up, and you have the black plastic housing, it may be destroyed too.

Don the impeller was ruined before i ever run water to it. it was just and old dry rotted impeller. I tried to spin the pump with my hand and noticed it was froze up. so i opened the water pump up and i noticed a piece had broke off. It was a water pump off of an 87 model motor and had probably nevver been changed.. sorry if i worded it wrong and threw anyone off course.
